Phew, the news is dark. Here’s a moment of beauty to catch your breath 🌿
The sun sets in a layer of yellow sky at the horizon and the blue sky and pink clouds above and a line of trees silhouetted and a dark stone wall in the foreground. It’s very peaceful.

Paid signature gatherers were advertising that it was an income tax on everyone to get the initiative on the ballot. I stopped and asked one whether the average person was really going to pay this tax. He nervously said, “Uh, eventually.” They were lying before this even got out of the gate.

👇💯 We were poor kids, but my mom scraped together enough to take us to the Field Museum, Art Institute, Shedd, and Lincoln Park Zoo (no holiday giving as a trade off). Those experiences create awe and curiosity. I’ve added interpretive centers as an adult, continuing to explore and read and learn.

This morning was cool enough to leave the dogs in the van & visit Fort Peck Interpretive Center. Notably, one other woman and I spent oodles of time on paleontology exhibits. We were the only two folks who sat through the 30 minute Fort Peck Dam construction video. #paleontology #engineering nerds.
Interpretive displays with fossils on the left and modern animals like bison and bears on the right and back. Looking up at a reconstructed snarling head of Peck’s Rex, a T. rex found nearby.

When the restored wetlands and trails actually look like the renderings the designers showed you. 🙂
Ponds circled by rushes and grasses, with a trail and boardwalk railing visible in the center between two ponds. Deciduous trees rise in the distance.

Moon rising over the powerhouse structures at Fort Peck last night.
Two rectangular buildings in Art Deco style rise above a dark lake, glowing softly. A full moon rises above them to the right.

I have had cell service off since I discovered that my current plan does not have unlimited roaming and my phone was cheerily racking up a huge bill. 😬 Haven’t been to Canada in 7 years and changed plans. I couldn’t post cool stuff, but I also couldn’t read the news. It wasn’t such a bad thing. 😏

The moon looked like it was being washed with frothy saltwater last night at Frenchman Valley campground. It was windy and the clouds swirled around, sometimes creating Halloween faces like #3. The prairie sky seems so vast, more like an ocean.
The bright moon shines through a lacy wash of thin clouds in an inky sky. Below, light from a camp shines where two women play the game Uno. Grey, white, and bluish mammarus clouds spread across the sky. The moon surrounded by clouds with inky blue holes where a goblin’s eyes and grin would be.

It was such a treat to find these gorgeous little green cup mushrooms in the forest this morning. Usually all I can ever find is the bright turquoise mycelia in the rotting wood. Finding the thumbnail size fruiting bodies is pretty rare for me. Their colour is unreal. 🍄🌿

There’s a nice 2-mile trail around camp that leads to a gate and more roaming. Dogs have been getting nicely pooped out here and in Charles Russell NWR.
An old homestead crumbling amongst prairie grasses, with a dark mountain range in the distance. A large black dog sits at attention looking out onto the prairie and trying to determine what he smells on the wind. A dog’s black head rests on soft dog blankets as he sleeps.

It’s mid-September and there are still prairie flowers. A few prairie dog holes are surrounded by petite purple asters, and have the look of a grand hotel lobby with elaborate landscaping. 🌸🌼
A yellow aster family flower with brown lush center and pointed petals with sculpted ridges. A sprawling short plant with small sunflower-looking blooms. A lush, purple-pinkish, low growing plant with spiky blooms that reach from the base. White, low growing aster family flowers against fern-like leaves.

💚 Your artist and designer friends probably aren't as full of themselves as you think.

Please remember: they share their work and accomplishments all the time as a matter of survival. No one else will be their hype man.

That grant? It's the only thing keeping them going during these slow months.

This flashy opportunity? They have been trying to make it happen for a year with only hope to keep them going and it's finally happening!

That exhibit? It's the only one they got into out of the 15 they submitted for.

That new painting they posted? They kinda need it to sell so they can pay the rent next month.

So be kind in your thoughts. Imagine if your job required social media presence on four platforms to make sure ends meet.

And if you see your friends or acquaintances post art that you like, please share it! It can make all the difference sometimes.

💚
