@classicstober.bsky.social Day 29 of #ClassicsTober25: Mysteries. The Eleusinian Mysteries were initiations held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone in Eleusis in ancient Greece. They are considered the "most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece". #ClassicsTober

✨The Eleusinian Mysteries✨ Demeter and Persephone flank a young youth thought to be Triptolemos. This beautiful Augustan era rendition based on a Greek relief is our pick for #ReliefWednesday and #ClassicsTober25.
Description from the Met: “Demeter, the goddess of agricultural abundance, stands at the left holding a sceptre. At the right is Persephone, her daughter and the wife of Hades, the god of the underworld. Each goddess extends her right hand toward a nude youth. The boy is thought to be Triptolemos, who was sent by Demeter to teach men how to cultivate grain. The original marble relief was found at the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis, the site of the Eleusinian mysteries, a secret cult that was famous throughout antiquity. The original Greek work and a number of Roman copies survive. Here the ten Roman fragments are embedded in a cast of the Greek relief.“

@classicstober.bsky.social Day 28 of #ClassicsTober25: Deimos and Phobos were the gods or personified spirits of fear. Deimos represented terror and dread, while his brother Phobos was panic, flight and rout. They were sons of the war-god Ares. As sons of Aphrodite, they also meant fear of loss.

#classicstober #classicstober25 Day 7: witch, sorceress I've gotten really far behind on Classicstober, so I'm just going to try to finish the prompts I feel really inspired to do.
A flat coloured digital art piece of Isis holding her husband Osiris. Isis is a woman with tawny brown skin, and long dark brown hair. She's looking down with a mournful expression at Osiris whose head she's holding up with one hand. Her other hand is cupped with magic flowing from it to Osiris's mouth. Osiris is a man with dark sepia coloured skin who's wrapped in linen from his neck down. His eyes are closed and his mouth is slightly open. Both of them are wearing heavy eyeliner in the Ancient Egyptian style.

#ClassicsTober25 Day 25 & 26: Tartaros & Punishment The right short side of this sarcophagus of Protesilaos & Laodameia shows the Tartaros with Sisyphos, punished by externally rolling a stone up the hill, Ixion tied to an eternally spinning wheel, and Tantalos who couldn't drink the water.
The short side of the sarcophagus shows Sisyphos, naked, kneeling and holding a large stone over his head. Followed by Ixion, also naked, his arms tied to a large wheel, and on the right Tantalos bringing the water to his mouth, which runs down between his fingers.

Day 23 of #Classicstober is the Lamia. Lamia were beautiful women with the body of snake who lured men (maybe children) in order to drink their blood/feast on their flesh. Companions to Hekate. (The only historic image I could find was a 17th century woodcut) #classicstober25
