I'm very please to announce a public release of my drag-and-drop bookmarking, game-making, and wandering tool Scrubjay! Scrubjay is a weird website builder that lets you cobble together web elements, images, links, text fragments, etc into a series of nested rooms...
"SCRUBJAY" sits over a bunch of images of frogs, birds, doors. it's a very 90s look

I've been thinking about scrubjay constantly since you first shared it years ago, very excited to play with it

I unfortunately think there's a high chance that "infinite personalized music" takes off because that's already how many people treat streaming services. I hope I'm wrong.

sooo many games that try to hack pbta into an "adventuring party" scenario without the extensive modifications that design necessitates

every time I see a pawn on the road with the posture sliders cranked so they're leaning alllll the way back I cackle

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 29/09/2026
yeah it makes sense that they needed to focus so hard on it given the whole pitch, but just saying "we need characters to feel distinct" is one thing and implementing it as well as they have is another. I think my favorite part is the ability to customize posture/walk animations

like do you think the proliferation of suburbia, the shrinking of household sizes, and the takeover of the automobile over the last 100 years HASN'T resulted in drastic shifts in how humans organize themself such that "clubs exist" stops being useful for swaths of the population?

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 28/09/2026
lmao where did I imply anything doesn't exist? what about "bleeding out" implies not existing to you?

in a multigenerational home with multiple stay-at-home residents, the people with jobs can actually get their "8 for what they please" but when you live with roommates at 28 you spend your evening doing the dishes and buying groceries and making dinner and then being tired

my personal theory is that the third space is dying because women entered the workforce after the war and adults started to become more independent/atomized and now nobody has any more time because we haven't adjusted standard work weeks to compensate for homes that don't have keepers
110
Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 28/09/2026
the third space isn't just "a bar" or a "a coffeeshop" it's a cultural practice that requires maintenance. we destroyed the infrastructure and replaced it with neoliberalism and now the culture is bleeding out and suburbians have forgotten how to be human

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 28/09/2026
when the term "third space" was first coined in 1965, shopping malls were just starting to take over america. you could make an argument that the mall killed the third space and now we can't even imagine it anymore

something cool about souls games is how they have this kayfabe of being brutal and scary, and that ends up making you feel "justified" when I figure out a cheesy strat to solve a problem. playing Elden Ring Seamless Co-op has been a constant exercising in picking our own difficulty, it's great

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 27/09/2026
some part of me feels like we just need to normalize modding+cheats even more, like there's a cultural problem here as much of a design problem.

big fan of games letting you open up the hood and fiddle with it if you want but I also find that there's a specific strange anxiety that creeps into me when I'm wondering the whole time I'm playing a game if I'm on the "right" difficulty setting

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 27/09/2026
yeah I find the best (imo) stealth games are the ones like invisible inc, monaco, & heat signature where stealth is designed to gracefully decay in to consequences/chaos rather than a failstate

I feel so vindicated lmao they're just saying it out loud. Wild that anti-AI and pro-AI people can both go through the exact same process of reasoning and then conclude opposite things. "AI is like cars" so true bestie we should abolish cars too while we're at it.

I keep thinking about how you could interleave "storytelling" into a graph like this: how water flows through a cave, or the historical purpose a sequence of rooms was built, etc
120
Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 22/09/2026
yeah I think the biggest unlock for me was the understanding that if you can prove that a graph replacement operation preserves a certain property of the whole graph, then you can use it very freely while keeping constraints like "the key to the door can't be behind the door"
210
Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 22/09/2026
have you read the paper for Unexplored's level generator yet? it's only partially related but I've been thinking a lot about graph replacement algorithms in general as having interesting properties here.

I guess hit points are better suited for tanks/mechs/etc than for human beings since they were literally invented for "how many holes can you put in a battleship before it goes down" but yeah the gravity well of "reduce a single number to 0" is very hard to escape regardless
110
Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 21/09/2026
abolish hit points imo

you don't gotta "support" or "stan" china (those are pointless concepts) but you SHOULD attempt to understand what they have and have not accomplished if you want to win, whether you're a liberal, socialist, anarchist, or whatever.

guys when is china going to run out of other people's money. why haven't they run out of other people's money yet.

it's so funny to see "communism doesn't work" people in 2026. I think that ship has sailed y'all!! Now you have to justify why your economic strategy is superior to the CCP's strategy, and that only seems to get more difficult with each passing year.

thinking of that guy bragging how his illiterate grandpa was safe from communism lol
tweet that reads "'literacy' was always the most basic tool of totalitarian propaganda. if you are not literate you can't be fed communist propaganda. the most steadfast anti-communist i knew in my childhood was my maternal grandfather who was illiterate. communist propaganda did not reach him"

Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 19/09/2026
Communism is a scientific discipline and tomorrow's strategy must be an improvement, correction, or refinement of yesterday's. Anything else is america's favorite pastime, anti-intellectualism

the stuff in his wake obviously took all the wrong lessons though, of course. it's noteworthy that all of tolkien's stories are presented not as objective lore but as, well, -stories- that have been passed down through oral and literary traditions and translated for a modern audience.
021
Clarity Flowers @clarity.flowers · 19/09/2026
honestly tolkien was much closer to the right of it here than we give him credit for. he seemed to recognize his mistakes and a lot of his nonfiction makes it clear he gets it. I think he just got too excited by his nerdy little project. happens to the best of us.

ever since I learned that accurate cartography was a tool specifically invented to serve colonialism I haven't been able to see the fantasy genre's obsession with maps and video games' need to have a linear coordinate system to represent space the same way
