have started testing my handwriting as part of my kanji flashcards. feels good to actually be able to write this stuff.
a fountain pen by a journal full of handwritten (print, not cursive) kanji. it does feel like my handwriting improves as it goes along overall.

c.f. @bloomfilters.plus's "the regime" bsky.app/profile/bloo...
the regime advises caution in referring to it as a "tsundere country" or "kuudere government". there is no "dere". only spreadsheets.the regime gently reminds all of its citizens that it is a totalitarian dictatorship with democratic deliberation and the enemy of humanity, and that it must be overthrown and abolished for the philosophical project of liberation to be completed.enemy mech pilot: ohh if i was a horny mech pilot and you disabled my mech would you abuse me

well I'll be damned. I guess that's right.

Alternative names that are also used for the British Isles include "Britain and Ireland",[3][8][9] the "British and Irish Isles",[10][11][12] the "Atlantic Archipelago",[13] the "Anglo-Celtic Isles",[14][15] the "British-Irish Isles",[16] and the Islands of the North Atlantic.[17] In documents drawn up jointly between the British and Irish governments, the archipelago is referred to simply as "these islands".[18]

realtime logging is a feature that I don't see out-of-the-box in many engines but that I find extremely essential for debugging. it's been fun this time around to take advantage of Ruby to make it super extensible so I can render arbitrary widgets instead of just text.

portland if it were good
Map of the neighborhood around the mall.

I've closed the off-ramp from the I84 west to holladay and marked the circular alternative route to the movie theater parking lot: I84 to I5 north to weidler to 15th to multnomah, labeled "It's slower but you'll deal".

I've put a modal filter on Multnomah and 9th, meaning no cars pass through this intersection, only bicycles. This preserves local access while drastically reducing the strain on this street. (You'd need exceptions for the busses to get through but this is doable).

Finally, I've labeled how the red+green+blue lines cut straight through this area with "take the MAX if u want to get to ur movie on time :)". The transit access is so great that we can afford to cut back our street access!!

really loved this whole piece. rt if u too have read the interview
through these solo runs, i learn how to bend time. i learn that being a good runner means experiencing everything a fraction of a second before anyone else. it means tapping into the schizophrenic logic you'd normally want to keep at bay, entertaining every doubt and delusion that sidles through the backdoor of your head. in order to fully inhabit tau ceti, you need to reciprocate: you have to let it inhabit you. you have to grant it easy access to your amygdala, the permission to stimulate fear before the violence has a chance to take place.

recklessly indulgent pattern recognition. frolicking through meadows of noise. harmony in a broken world. stalker shit.during pauses in the action, i want to ask sparrow about otherside picnic. i've told her half of the truth, which is that "otherside picnic saved my life." but we aren't close yet, so i've avoided telling her the whole truth—"last year, i sort of lost my mind, and then otherside picnic saved my life"—out of fear of appearing like i'm trauma-dumping. i'd like to think i'm learning from past mistakes, even outside of tau ceti.

so instead, one night, as we stare at the loading screen, i volunteer: "how far did you get into otherside picnic?"

"oh, it's been a while since i've last checked in on it," she says. "i think the manga had basically just gotten to the yuri."

"well, wait," i say. "i think i know roughly which moment you're talking about. but also, i mean, to be fair, the yuri is very much present the whole time."

"listen," sparrow says. "i've read the fucking interview, okay? i know the yuri's there. but you get what i'm trying to say."

then we load in and instinctively survey the map, cutting the conversation short. "so, bio-research arms lockers first?" i ask. i tell myself i'll just ask her the rest later.

portland needs a lot of these imo
"Dead-ending of Lateral Streets": streets that used to connect to a main transit passage are turned into dead ends (with a circular cut-out to allow for u-turns), while still allowing bikes/pedestrians to move freely.

Many Americans would blanch in horror at the thought of a bar or a restaurant or even a shop next to their suburban house. In fact, many Japanese people would feel the same! But in Japan, there are ways for neighborhoods to come together with local businesses and make sure that the character of the neighborhood is preserved. McReynolds writes:

In Tokyo, a disruptive bar next door would also be unwelcome. However, a degree of legal ambiguity is present, which drives neighbors to negotiate a mutually tolerable consensus regarding in-home businesses. Under Tokyo’s zoning regulations…dual-use residences are permitted by right; however, the regulations also prohibit creating an unreasonable nuisance for your neighbors in the process. Local neighborhood associations (自 治会 or jijikai, literally “self-governance association”) will often mediate those disputes between neighbors about what is or isn’t unreasonable; if a consensus can’t be reached, then the adjudicator of last resort will in practice be the local branch of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department…Given the risks and uncertainties that come with summoning police in a dispute, most neighbors prefer to reach consensus among themselves whenever possible.

I have no real ill will towards bluesky but it's worth saying that "mastodon.social is being DDOS'd, so much for your ~true~ decentralization" fails to land when, in cases like this, 75% of the fediverse remains operational, vs. -1.4%- of bluesky. mastodon.social and bsky.app are not comparable.

I made a program that generates a 7x7 grid and deletes 7 nodes from it at random as a first pass for testing some graph-based game design ideas and it's honestly fascinating how this simple algo makes such evocative layouts. I feel like these could be FPS maps or something.

even better: what if we rezoned Cesar Chavez??? Why is this Stroad residential-zoned? It keeps killing people and we HAVE to do something about that. We could narrow to two lanes or add bike lanes! and build the whole thing out as a new commercial corridor. Kills like three birds with one stone!
Cesar E. Chavez blvd in SE portland4 lanes of Cesar Chavez. This stroad makes me sick. Living in these houses sucks ass because the road is SO loud. It's a high-crash corridor that's taken way too many lives in the past years.

I think the first place to start would be D1 but that's not my n'hood so idk the best options. What if we rezoned this entire stretch of SE 34th into mixed-use commercial/residential but added a series of modal filters to keep car traffic low?

public.ridereport.com/pdx Another fun thing you can see here: at SE 35th and Salmon, where the greenway switches from Salmon to Taylor, ridership fans out. People struggle to actually follow the twists and turns of Portland's greenways, and this dumps them at Cesar Chavez without a light!
A high ridership count moving east along salmon, until 35th where ridership splits equally between Main, Taylor, and Salmon. Main and Salmon both have traffic lights at Cesar Chavez but Taylor does not, so this is a pretty alarming experience! I literally had this happen to me multiple times when I first started riding in SE.

talking about portland streets makes me nostalgic for my job ~2018-2021 helping cities collect data about scooter+ebike rideshare programs. check this out: people prefer to take scooters directly on Hawthorne just as much as they'll bother to take the greenway on salmon!
A map of the SE Hawthorne neighborhood with street segments colored in by the total number of rideshare scooter trips that have passed through that segment. Most noteworthy is that Salmon and Hawthorne have pretty much equal ridership numbers despite Hawthorne having no bike infrastructure whatsoever.

I spent a little bit of time importing your data into an OpenStreetMaps view and have been playing with color to make something that communicates the point more aggressively
The same data but against the low-contrast default OpenStreetMaps background, with a red-to-yellow ramp for the "bad" categories and two similar shades of blue/teal for the "good" ones.

there was this absolutely bonkers painting of John Brown ("Tragic Prelude") by John Steuart Curry that I love tho
John Brown rendered as a giant of a man, twice as tall as the union and confederate soldiers behind him. His arms are splayed out with a bible in one hand and a rifle in the other, and his massive beard flows in the wind. He looks like he's ready to fuck some shit up. In background is a fire and a tornado.

Discord messages written by me:

it seems to me like a really important part is finding some way to make your entities "distinct" to the player so they can form relationships with them

like something I noticed about Cult of the Lamb is that I really struggle to even remember any facts about my cult members

they have two or three random traits, a name, an age, and appearance, and that's all. not a lot to go off of
but the unfortunate truth about that is that you could fix that problem by adding a lot MORE traits (and making them more specific+interesting)

and there's a couple possible angles there:
- traits with real-world significance, like "transgender" in Rimworld, or CKIII having real countries
- traits that noticably gameplay. the most fun trait in Cult of the Lamb is "cowardly" (or something like that) because it causes them to run away from you and act scared when you interact with them, so you really notice it in play

Well, in 2024 there were 23 fatalities for people inside of motor vehicles, and (as far as I can find) exactly 1 fatality for someone on a train. Given that ~78% of trips are in cars and 4.4% in transit, scaling transit deaths by a factor of 17 to match still makes it the safer choice.
National fatality statistics by mode of transportation. "Highway" is comically higher than every other bar ("air", "railroad", and "transit")

It has a series of escalating anti-car opinions about urban planning. Like when I use google maps, it converts that map into useful instructions. But if I want to parcel out a bunch of land into agreed-upon "owners", and to particularly find which which land is "ownerless" so I can claim it myself, a map becomes essential
In the Renaissance, with the renewed interest in classical works, maps became more like surveys once again, while European exploration of the Americas and their subsequent effort to control and divide those lands revived interest in scientific mapping methods. Peter Whitfield, the author of several books on the history of maps, credits European mapmaking as a factor in the global spread of western power: "Men in Seville, Amsterdam or London had access to knowledge of America, Brazil, or India, while the native peoples knew only their own immediate environment" (Whitfield). Jordan Branch and his advisor, Steven Weber, propose that the power of large kingdoms and nation states of later history are an inadvertent byproduct of 15th-century advances in map-making technologies.
