Today marks 188 years since the US violently relocated five nations of Indigenous Americans (Cherokee, Muscogee Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole) from their ancestral homelands. This was called the Trail of Tears. We honor those that lost their lives in this genocidal act of violence.
Commemorating the Trail of TearsToday marks 188 years since the US violently relocated five nations of Indigenous Americans (Cherokee, Muscogee Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole) from their ancestral homelands. The Indian Removal Act passed by congress in 1830 led to their forced removal.

It opened Indigenous land up to colonizers, and forced over a hundred thousand Native Americans to walk hundreds of miles to a specially designated territory across the Mississippi River. They made the journey on foot, without food, water or any support whatsoever. Between 15,000-16,000 people died – no one over 60 or under 6 survived the journey.

So, there is a precedent for vetoing an MP's resignation Viscount Chelsea (Henry Cadogan) applied for the Chiltern Hundreds in 1842 The Chancellor (Goulburn) refused because, get this, Cadogan wanted to resign to obstruct an investigation for bribery h/t @fascinatorfun.bsky.social and @gazhay.com
Screenshot from the linked article, with the following text highlighted

"The noble Lord had stated, that it was unusual to refuse the Chiltern Hundreds, except on account of mental incapacity, or where proceedings were pending for the expulsion of the applicants from their seats. In this case, however, the House had decided that compromises had been entered into, which had the effect of obstructing the investigation of bribery; "

If you're going into a holiday period, consider these dos & don’ts before you travel to Indigenous lands. 👇️ Beware that many tourist destinations are empty of the very people who originally managed the lands and protected the nature & wildlife we see there today.
Advice for tourists who visit Indigenous territoriesIf you're visiting a national park or going on safari, be aware that you could be supporting "fortress conservation."Millions of Indigenous people around the world have been illegally evicted from their ancestral lands in the name of conservation.

These evictions continue today and destroy Indigenous people and communities.Advice for tourists travelling to Indigenous territories

WHAT TO DO:
1. INFORM YOURSELF before you go and boycott unethical travel

2. PRIORITIZE companies that work closely with Indigenous peoples and share any profits equally with them

3. RESPECT the cultures and way of life of the Indigenous people you visit
