Today marks 188 years since the US violently relocated five nations of Indigenous Americans (Cherokee, Muscogee Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole) from their ancestral homelands. This was called the Trail of Tears. We honor those that lost their lives in this genocidal act of violence.

The Indian Removal Act passed by congress in 1830 led to their forced removal.

It opened Indigenous land up to colonizers, and forced over a hundred thousand Native Americans to walk hundreds of miles to a specially designated territory across the Mississippi River.

They made the journey on foot, without food, water or any support whatsoever. Between 15,000-16,000 people died – no one over 60 or under 6 survived the journey.

The ‘Pintupi Nine’:
a story of resistance
The last uncontacted Indigenous people in Australia were contacted in 1984.
Did you know that?

In the 1950s,
when the
British
military
were testing
missiles in the western
desert, the Australian
government contacted and
forcibly moved the Pintupi people.

They were resettled hundreds of kilometers to the east. In the resettlement areas, many Indigenous people soon died from disease, trauma, and alcohol abuse.

In the 1980s, refusing to give up on their homeland, Pinta Pinta and other Pintupi people moved back to their desert.

It was there that they came across other Pintupi people, who they didn’t know still lived in the area.

Most of the brothers’ group of nine Pintupi people chose to join Pinta Pinta’s community; some have since become well-known artists.

The community continued to fight for the return of their traditional land, and in 2001 a territory of 43,000 square kilometers was recognized as theirs.

Armed groups are vying for control of the Nukak Reserve. Some Nukak families have had to flee their territory, while others remain trapped. A new government has taken office in Colombia. What will they do to ensure that the Nukak people can live in their territory, free from violence?

URGENT: The Nukak are under threat in their own territory because of
armed conflict.

Several armed groups are fighting it out within the Nukak Territory, in Colombia.

Some Nukak communities have had to leave their territory, while others have had to stay put.

The Nukak people came into contact with mainstream society in the late 1980s due to pressure on their territory.

Although the Nukak Reserve* was established in 1993, their territory has been continuously taken over by coca
growers, cattle ranchers, and
armed groups.

The survival of Indigenous peoples is strongly linked to their territory.
Without it, they can’t survive.

That’s why the Nukak are resisting. Some families returned by themselves despite everything stacked against them...

This is a hugely important victory for the Kawahiva people.
