The common view is that parents cause their child's speech and language challenge. As a result many families carry a lot of guilt. We need to change the narrative. Parents do not cause Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). #DLDday #DevLangDis

Developmental Language Disorder is more common than autism but because awareness is low most people with DLD don't know they have it. And the impact of unrecognised and unsupported DLD is significant on education and mental health #DLDday is on Friday. Join in and make a difference. #DevLangDis

Yeah, I've come across that idea too. But it's a fallacy that shared slides ensure QA. Learning depends on the teacher in the classroom. A struggling teacher may not be able to help their students learn. And someone who hasn't done the cognitive work of lesson planning can struggle to teach well.

Yes, I agree. At school I've been talking much more about how & why we are using slides in lessons. I'm also part of an action research group across our MAT & I'm considering a question about teaching without slides.

I think the dependency issue raised in your first post is exacerbated in situs where slides are centrally produced. We've had new tchrs asking for the 'lessons' (slides) to be emailed! And where they've trained in schools w such slide decks, they struggle to know how to plan a lesson. It's a worry!

i am working on some transcript data of a teacher telling a group of children that they must 'speak in full sentences' in which he pauses, coughs, says errm a lot, repeats words, apologises, gets confused, is confusing, and my god how is this idea of 'speak in full sentences' still alive

Was teaching about the shift towards performativity/social-constructivist perspectives in sociolinguistics yesterday and a student posted this meme on our course page. Fairly accurate representation of first wave --> third wave sociolinguistics. n.b., /n/ refers to (ING) variation.
Tuxedo Winnie the Pooh Meme: The first 'typical' Winne the Pooh has text next to him that says "speaker uses 'mate' and /n/ because he is male" - the second, tuxedo Winnie the Pooh is followed by text which says "speaker uses 'mate' and /n/ because he is indexing stances (e.g., toughness) which are ideologically linked to heternormative masculinity'.

Yes. Diverse perspectives are essential for any curriculum redraft. And she could also question the inequity between subjects - why only 2 drafters for English? Some other disciplines have formally involved subject associations and a range of age/stage practitioners.

Absolutely. And she should also be questioning the choice of 2 white men, from favoured MAT backgrounds to write the new curriculum materials. Diversity is an essential aspect of RfP .

This is interesting. A complaint was made about the PISA sample being upwardly skewed for the last set of results as well. More evidence to suggest that perhaps the outcomes are not as reliable as some would say.

I’m so pleased this article has been written. I can think of so many more “pieces of data” which suggest that the English Ed-system needs to reflect hard on what it is doing. Not least the latest attendance figures. As Christian says, be wary of confirmation bias. And be cautious about fluency.

clarefeeneyuk.bsky.social @clarefeeneyuk.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Cohort details are important to clarify too. This would skew the 'data'. 'There are also some signs that England’s sample of students was upwardly biased, with a much lower percentage of students on free school meals or with special educational needs and disabilities than some other countries.'

They are too small. We changed a few years ago and I was crestfallen when I first saw them. A tech 'upgrade' that actually makes teaching more tricky. Where possible, we have put up smaller whiteboards on both sides and that helps.
