Day two of #Eastercon started with a very insightful panel on Anne McCaffrey and her works. A lot of fondness for all the best bits that kept us coming back, some fascinating contextualisation of the time & atmosphere she wrote in, as well as her influence on current writing, fandom etc... 1/?

Nine Worlds used to have panels of mini talks on a given topic. One I remember loving had a bunch of speakers each get 10 minutes to monologue about why they love their favourite tropes & convince the audience it's the best. They're were powerpoints and puppets involved.

Turns out Rail Replacement Buses are much more pleasant when it's a train replacement service on a quiet day than when it's a tube replacement on a weekday in London. Still wish I didn't to take 3 different train/buses instead of a direct service but it honestly wasn't that bad.

Whelp, I'm trying to buy train tickets to get to Birmingham for Eastercon & apparently there's often a ton of planned engineering works on Easter weekend... Send good vibes to me, I DO NOT WANT to get stuck with taking a damn Rail Replacement Bus.

Trans people are just people who just want to go use the loo in peace and not get murdered. I promise when you don't spend every day turning over every rock to find problems caused by teams people, you will not find any problems caused by trans people.

Also, from what little I know about that book I haven't read, I don't think Jesus would be thrilled about all this oppressing a marginalised group you TERF assholes are doing.

As usual, TERFs out there saying the quiet part out loud. Here's a reminder that not everybody takes their stance on everything from Jesus Christ. There are other religions and ideologies in the world.

Courier Z v1-2 available on Kickstarter now, and you can also buy my previous comics from the same campaign. Separately or all together! Digital or PDF! Necromancers opening shops! Kids turning into grim reapers! Many genres, but the same fun-yet-sad vibe. www.kickstarter.com/projects/nic...
The two Courier Z covers by Lender Shell - first one showing her smugly flying towards the camera with the caption "How it started".

Second one showing her drowning in crime junk with the caption "How it's going".Grid of square cover image of all my comic projects -

Tangent re: "ADHD is present from childhood" Of course the brain chemistry of ADHD is there from childhood, but recent research suggest symptoms may appear later because structures put in place by parents/family can help mask symptoms, until we start to have to create the structure ourselves. (1/?)

I feel like a lot of people who aren't tuned in think J.K. Rowling's transphobia is the typical celebrity case of "oh, they just made some off-color comments one time several years ago", and not a single-minded genocidal obsession which has utterly consumed her entire goddamn life.

She's not just a creator who happens to be a bigoted arsehole. She's a really proactive participant in Scottish and UK political debates, who uses her private wealth to muster forces enacting actual real world political change for the worse. She is not just a rich writer, she is an oligarch

I think a key problem with the whole Harry Potter thing is that some people, especially Americans, underestimate severely the degree to which Joanne K Rowling is an actual political actor.

This is obviously the main reason to never ever direct another penny to that woman's pocket but also, to me personally, the joy had been extinguished. To see something that once meant so much to me, that was so hopeful, turn into a beacon for hate and bigotry, I can never unsee that. She ruined it.

This. TBC, the reason my family won't support anything HP-related is NOT because I have some grand moral view that it's only acceptable to support work created by good people. It's because she is literally, publicly using the $ from her books/show/games/etc to do bad things that hurt people I love.

I guess when my dad said everyone gets more conservative as they get older, he really meant "Someday, you'll be so stressed & overwhelmed by All Of The Things that you'll have to stop focusing on the state of the world for too long just so you can get through your day in a not wholly feral manner."

If I ever have to come up with a solo conference panel extremely last minute, I'm pretty confident I could come up with a solid hour on the Problematic Feminism of Pern. From Not Like The Other Girls Menolly, to Strong Female Character Lessa, via Brekke & Kylara, ie. the madonna vs whore dichotomy

Oh I definitely got all the good bits of Pern, there's a reason I read all the books many times over & they shaped me deeply as a person! It's also why my mum thought her 11yo should read them, it's just that now I know there were things in there I was to young to pick up on and she was not.

Claire Rousseau @clairerousseau.bsky.social · 13/08/2025
Fascinating! All the Pern books were on the same sff shelf and from the same imprint when I was buying them as a kid. This was in France in the 90s.

My memory is that they were even shelved in a different section of Borders in the 90s than the rest of Pern, which were in Sci-fi/Fantasy. The Alanna books were there too.

Claire Rousseau @clairerousseau.bsky.social · 13/08/2025
I'm sure McCaffrey's intentions were good, but more than one thing can be going on at once. Lessa is an awesome character - smart, fierce & complex - but her life partner keeps *physically shaking her* when they disagree & it's presented as Just A Thing F'lar Does, no big deal.

The Harper Hall books definitely have more of a YA feel to them (though that marketing category didn't quite exist yet when I was its target demo) and Menolly's books do read as a triumph over sexism, albeit due in great part to Menolly's exceptional talent. She's Not Like The Other Girls.

Claire Rousseau @clairerousseau.bsky.social · 12/08/2025
I don't even think those books are inappropriate for an 11yo because they include sex scenes, it's just the power/gender dynamics are so fucked up, you really need to be better equipped to go "well that's not cool or romantic" than any middle-schooler should be.

Dragonriders of Pern had to be the most formative but I was also definitely too young when I read Clan of the Cave Bear. Both were handed to me by my mum who borrowed them from the library and thought I'd enjoy them *after she was done reading them* when I was like 11 or 12.

So I will say this as gently as I can: given the current state of the world, cons (especially held in the US) should really keep or enhance their online programming instead of eliminating it. I understand it takes resources to run a hybrid con but the alternative is to exclude the rest of the world

Hugo nominations are open and I have only two requests: 1. Commit to picking 2 non-Tordotcom novellas for your ballot 2. For the love of all that is holy in this world, do not nominate adult/crossovers or middle grade books for the Lodestar - officially categorized YA only!

In a turn of events never before exposure by moi, I have made it onto the train I actually planned to take to the airport, not just the backup train that would get me there an hour and a half before my flight, not the full two. And that's without the train running late? I was just... on time?

I'm off to France today to hang out with family for a few days, so obvi, I've got to have a lot of books lined up. I prefer audiobooks for the plane: a few hours left of The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley, plus The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty out from the library.
