Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 9hGraham Farmelo's lecture would be just up my street but being that I don't live in Oxford (nor am I nearby generally) means I can't go! I've a big interest in scientist Roger Penrose. Here are 2 links to general threads I've written about Sir Professor Roger Penrose, who is my favourite scientist. 030
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 10hTo the Conjecture Institute group(ref other pltfm) These subjects are superb to study whether professionally or as an amateur. In particular I notice familiar information theory, quantum computation & mathematics. Thanks for providing a list of them plus the individual people who know about them. 000

In these conditions, there's an extraordinary dance between nitrogen & oxygen & the speed at which light is emitted from each to produce the various colours & patterns. #AuroraBorealis 000
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 11hThe incredible #AuroraBorealis display is caused by colliding energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere called the thermosphere. Auroras are emissions of photons in the Earth's upper atmosphere from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, then oxygen & nitrogen - 100

Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I'm studying Game Theory more. It's a combination of mathematics & psychology, whereby each amplifies the other when used together & more so when applied to science. The subject of agency is of specific interest to me (playing a part without being a part). arxiv.org/abs/2610.06373 010

Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Imagine That! The square root of minus one, written as √(−1), is an imaginary number. At 1st it seems surreal to combine i with a real number in order to form the origins of the complex number, but for e.g. in electrical engineering, it's a quirk of real #mathematical nature. 000
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I think you're just as much a scientist as what they think qualifies as one. It's such a waste to dismiss the skills & experience of an excellent school teacher who has proven themselves in this subject & one you understand more than most, so I think you are a proper scientist. You're welcome anyway. 110

Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Moon Over Trees The Moon can be seen just above trees from my garden, with a warm glow & in slight cloud haze. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Oh wow, send pics. I bet you get a great pics. I'm currently indoors but I'll have a quick check at the sky outside in the garden when I get some supper later. To be honest, I only ref to a small gap in the sky I saw through the window earlier. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Yeah, I said to Steve @lostinmilbury.bsky.social last wk, that there was a prediction it'd be warm this wk. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Impressive that your background is astrophysics, so you'll know all the theories of the subject already then. The universe is much more vast than we realise, so who knows what could be possible. There are theories yrs old thst haven't yet been tackled in a way, so there's a chance for time travel. 010
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 19/09/2026If you're new here, this post linked, is just a sample of the projects I do online, in particular science writing & theorising. I started science writing when my website went live in Dec 1999 but had an interest in science many yrs before that -I may have mentioned, since age 6. 011
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Sir Professor Roger Penrose is my favourite scientist. This is a link to a post I did, which is a bit about him & part of a thread (of a few threads) I wrote about mathematicalphysics which references his books I have, & his thinking behind his theory making. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I was going to mention Danny @profdanny.bsky.social as he's got some superb books too. It's so fascinating discovering other ppl's books & creates awareness of value of books compared to the encroaching AI areas that we don't want. Full bookshelves are also great wall insulators & sound dampeners. 020
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 17/09/2026They are! Thanks for posting pics, it's appreciated👍 I've noticed a time theme. Interesting... I've read this by Carl Sagan & totally agree & it doesn't stop being so today! So, what are your thoughts on the physics of time travel? I'm sceptical about it but so far it's mathematically possible. 110
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Hya again Oh wow, these are great! I like the colour of your bookshelf too. I'll have a proper look at them all tonight. I think books, in particular old ones, should be kept away from those companies that have started to destroy them to gain money & power with AI. What a world we live in now... 110
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Ok yeah agree, it's a bit unpredictable (it can still warm in September) but it'll be bareable temperatures (I reckon) 👍 I've an interest in bookshelves & books. Post more of your bookshelf & books! In fact, I might post something here generally asking ppl to post theirs if they have them too... 110
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 16/09/2026That's understandable. As long as you're eating well, then your baseline should stay ok. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Hidden Worlds Unlike astronomy, the science of electrical engineering isn't visually obvious. Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 14/09/2026So there were no excuses. During childhood this creates resilience later in life, whether mental or physical. Although this thread I wrote is a bit off topic, science proves cold, hardship & being exposed to tough challenges earlier means being better prepared for any eventuality later in life. 010
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Continued- It's also a reason I've stayed slim, as well as genetics. I also grew up with no central heating, so my theory is, being exposed to cold temperatures on a regular basis, means the body burns fat sooner & cold has proven to have positive effects on mental health & general life resilience. 010
Claire C ζ(s)mith @clairecsmith.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Continued- My best friend & I walked to school & back for dinner (we were working class so mid day meals were called dinner not lunch) then back for afternoon, then we walked back home. This was during freezing weather e.g snow, ice, wind & rain. There was no excuse & we never expected lifts to school 110
