He was driving a car around Burning Man with an inflatable costume that made it look like a happy bug. He was a jolly guy and happy to both give and receive hugs.

I think partially the hype is so extreme that it's hard not to say it's overhyped. I do lean a bit towards A3, but when people are saying it will replace all work and effectively be a digital god, it's hard to choose anything but "overhyped". I think A2 covers so many bases.

By far the coolest use of AI is applying machine learning algorithms to recordings of animals to slowly decipher their language. I want to see us crack the code and communicate with whales so badly.

It seems to imply that he has seen a neighbor flying the Greek flag and, not recognizing it, assumed that it was some sort of Pride flag and is now poring over images of Pride flags to try and determine the sexual orientation of his Greek neighbor.

The OP's boss is looking at two screens on twin monitors. On the left is a picture of some house flying the Greek flag. On the right is a list of all the various Pride flags. The boss is looking at the screen with the Greek flag quizzically.

The percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere might not be the limiting factor for insects, meaning that in theory we could still have huge-ass bugs around today (if, according to the new theory, we didn't have even larger vertebrates around to eat the biggest and tastiest ones).

How did ancient bugs get so big? The prevailing theory may be wrong
Flying insect respiratory systems suggest abundant oxygen can’t explain ancient gigantism

There are so many arguments where debate over #2, which has clear data points to back up the divergence, ends up devolving into #1, which has enough different data points that both sides can find enough evidence for their claim to keep the argument going on forever.

People are talking about two separate questions 1) How are people doing in this economy? 2) Why did people's self-reported sense of financial security start to deviate significantly from their sense of the healthy of the overall economy starting in ~2021?

One of the biggest things I'm taking away from the war is the relatively ability to manufacture both offensive and defensive drones/missiles over anything else. I could also see that becoming the defining metric in a conflict between the US and China, for instance.

...negated the Russian armor advantage, and drones eventually overwhelmed it. Eventually drones were able to reach the artillery lines. It seems to me that new technology has made it more difficult for traditional weapons to hold an overwhelming advantage.

But are those lessons fungible? Granted it was only... a month? But the US was unable to achieve air dominance over Iran. Russia started off with an enormous amount of artillery, but it wasn't enough to grant an overwhelming victory in part because lighter weapons (javelins, TOWs, etc)

Interesting data point in the debate--bridges are actually getting fixed, even as references to "crumbling infrastructure" increase, so this actually seems to be a point of misperception.
construction-physics.com
The Worst US Bridges are Getting Fixed
It’s become a common assumption that US infrastructure is in a poor state of repair; that our roads, bridges, pipes, and transmission lines are decaying faster than they’re being repaired or replaced.

Since oil from Hormuz mostly goes to Asia, if we're blockading everything but Chinese tankers, this feels laser-targeted to harm/anger all the potential allies we would need to contain/balance China

I think one of the big problems is that many brands that people once associated with quality have degraded significantly, so it feels like everything has gotten worse. Maybe similar-quality items still exist, but they're not as well known and feel more high-end now.

It feels like something that should have been written in February of last year with the assumption being that, with the scourge of woke defeated, rich people were finally free to be themselves.

So it was pitched as a style piece on one of the wealthiest women alive, and then editorially framed as controversial that she loves being rich, because we're meant to think that she's a new type of rich person who spends money on things she likes and doesn't feel guilty?

Rational arguments only work when someone already agrees on all the underlying assumptions that make the argument work. You either have to argue within their own moral frame or change their underlying feelings about the situation. And even then, that's only achievable at the statistical margins.

Iran won the war and the only move that we apparently seem to have, will leave our allied nations in the Middle East unable to support their current populations for months if not years.

He really was such a gentle and brilliant dude. I only met him once, so I don't want to claim too much. The person prosecuting the case thought it was going to make their political career--that's why they came down so hard on him. Of course, it destroyed any chance they had at public office.

As someone who met him and, at the time, was close to people who knew him well, nobody around him ever thought this. I would be best not to entangle his legacy with a conspiracy that he was somehow outmaneuvered by Sam Altman.

I think based on this story, everyone in the admin is distancing themselves from this fiasco and blaming Bibi. I feel like the Israel/US relationship is on pretty thin ice and and Netanyahu risks blowing it up entirely if he tries to restart the war.
