which could allow other nations to prosecute them for perceived crimes against citizens. Remember that the US was elbows deep in segregation and Jim Crow, the UK was dealing with India and so on. The Soviets were blocking opportunities for prosecution of their crimes against citizens as well.

Nuremberg was both accountability and showmanship. I’m vaguely recalling that part of why there was a cap on Nuremberg defendants was the fact that the courtroom only had so many seats at the docket. There’s also the issue that countries also wanted to be cautious about establishing precedent

It was in part a volume issue. Some of the assumption was that individual European states would eventually hold relevent trials down the road. (As happened with France and Klaus Barbie)

As part of this, moving away from letting lawyers be the arbitrators of what moral is. Based on what I’ve seen the last two years, a lot of leadership have defaulted to “if JAG says it’s fine, what can I do?”

Leo is pushing a hard pivot back to those issues (immigration, supporting the poor, environment, labor, etc). There will be a ripple effect over the next decade. Catholics are about 20 percent of the population. (50 million) Refocusing those voters to what are more Democrat leaning positions

Y’all, Catholics don’t applaud in church. Ever. This is a thing. You don’t have to like the church or organized religion. You do need to understand that up until the 90s and the US church pivot to abortion as a primary issue, the Catholic Church has long been a powerhouse in immigrant communities

Yesterday Tillis made a comment about martyrdom, specifically in reference to colleagues who won’t go against Trump. Same day, Pope Leo commented on martyrdom

In his book, Sen. Thom Tillis writes that at least 30 of his Republican Senate colleagues have privately expressed reservations about many of President Trump's actions, but are afraid to break with him publicly.
"They don't want to bear the weight of the president. I get that," explains Sen. Thom Tillis. "You're up for re-election? He'll target you in a primary."
"You know what all martyrs have in common?
They're dead," he adds.
