Of course, I am not the first one to criticize the cultural backlash. I build on other insightful works, such as those by @arminschaefer.bsky.social (doi.org/10.1017/S000...) and @drtomdog.bsky.social (doi.org/10.1111/1475...). Anyone who wants to discuss the paper, feel free to reach out!

But we should not see the growth of far-right parties as a natural consequence of progressive value change. A more contingent reading, where historical context shapes how far-right parties can successfully frame national and cultural decline, arguably matches the empirical picture better.

Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Ultimately, my argument is not that culture does not matter in the context of far-right party success. It clearly does.
140
Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
To conclude, I discuss whether the backlash in Poland and Hungary should be seen as directed not against domestic progressivism but Western European cultural influence, and whether the theory can be salvaged by switching trans rights for "older" issues like gay marriage. (I don't think it can.)

Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Which in turn calls into question the logical chain going from value change via authoritarian reflex to far-right resurgence. Moral traditionalism predicts far-right voting where traditional values are still predominant, not where they have been replaced by more liberal or progressive norms.

Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
In the empirical analysis, only Poland and Hungary align with the predictions of the cultural backlash. I find no evidence for the effect of N&I's "tipping point", which should be readily observable in Western European countries that are the protagonists of Inglehart's "Silent Revolution".
130
Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
And only in countries with overwhelmingly socially conservative far-right electorates do these attitudes predict far-right voting, here illustrated with average marginal effects of support for same-sex parenthood in a multilevel logistic regression.
Average marginal effects of the EVS 2017 item measuring attitudes towards same-sex parenthood (0-10 scale), in a multilevel logistic regression model grouped by country, with far-right support as the outcome variable. Especially Poland shows strong effects in the direction predicted by the cultural backlash. But most countries show no significant effect.

Christian Kloetzer @ckloetzer.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
For N&I, sexually illiberal attitudes (in a liberalizing society) are a key pathway towards the "authoritarian reflex" that drives voters towards the far right. But far-right electorates show diverse attitudes on this dimension, here illustrated with support for same-sex marriage.
Bar chart showing attitudes towards same-sex marriage among far-right supporters in the Netherlands, Hungary, Finland and Germany on a 0-10 scale, where 10 is the highest level of support for same-sex marriage.

In the Netherlands, almost 50% of far-right voters indicate the highest level of support (10), while in Hungary more than half are fully opposed (0). In Finland and Germany the pattern is more mixed, with peaks at 0, 5 and 10, and remaining respondents scattered in between.

📜 New paper out in @electoralstudies.bsky.social! If you've always found Norris and Inglehart's cultural backlash theory of far-right voting unconvincing, I can confirm your skepticism – at least in the European context. Here, it has both theoretical and empirical flaws. doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

There we go. What the people want is clearly hushed criticism of Trump’s America, giving zero pushback, telling ourselves we’re too weak and dependent to matter, and hoping someone else will fix it for us.

Case in point. Unlike with the 2003 Iraq war, the fallout for Europe of Trump's war on Iran is not just long-term but immediate. Including at the gas pump where voters feel it directly. Where's the European political offer to meet the equivalent of Canadian voters' demand for spine?

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky
I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, your application was not successful.

Review process

As part of the initial triage of the 179 proposals submitted to this call, each was assessed using an AI-based review. Every proposal was read independently by several different AI models against the same seven criteria used to shape this call (including cyber security relevance, research quality and novelty, importance of the problem addressed, feasibility of the project plan, likely outputs and impact, value for money, and responsible research practice), with each model asked to give a score and a written justification with supporting quotations from the text. To guard against any one model's idiosyncrasies, we also ran a second, independent process in which different AI models debated the merits and weaknesses of each proposal before reaching a judgement, again against the same criteria. Scores from both processes were combined to produce an overall ranking.

This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review. Projects selected for funding were drawn from those that progressed to the full human review stage. We recognise that AI-assisted assessment is a new and evolving part of the review process, and we are continuing to evaluate how well it aligns with the judgements of human reviewers on this call. We will soon produce a document detailing our method, so that others can build upon it and improve it.

Feedback on your application

Your application was not selected to progress beyond the AI triage stage. To provide transparency on the outcome of this assessment, we are sharing below the scores (out of 5) from each of the two AI review processes described above, together with the mean score across the two processes.

Not Frohnmaier, but the “party philosopher” Jongen. Appearing next to Vannacci, who appears obsessed with homosexuality, also feels like a rebuke of (openly lesbian) Alice Weidel.
Roberto Vannacci, leader of Future Nazionale, which is to the Right of Giorgia Meloni's governing coalition, introduced the German AfD's Marc Jongen at a rally on Sunday.

I think that "voters like politicians who stand up to bullies" is an almost simplistic, but non-negligible part of this. European politicians should give pushing back a try – on Trump's tariffs as much as on his murderous foreign policy that also makes us all poorer and unsafer.

But in wise foresight it appears that Vannacci realized that one could not put more than 60 of his supporters in a group chat without it degenerating into the vilest racism and calls for mass violence.
Open Online (17 August 2026)

I also think the topic of Israel is salient beyond its wars. Netanyahu has worked hard to get Trump into the White House, which surely is of some interest to Democratic voters. And he's milking the success of this endeavor at the expense of a wide range of American interests at home and abroad.

Wow that was quick. So under Trump, the US is not only clearly unwilling to honor Article 5 in case of war, it also shows a total lack of concern for military readiness for such an event. Russia will surely have taken note, but I am less sure about European capitals.
Reuters (4 August 2026):

“U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range missiles during five-month Iran war, sources say

The United States has used up most of its stockpile of key long-range precision missiles during its five-month war with Iran, raising concerns among U.S. officials over military readiness for future conflicts, according to Reuters.
The depleted weapons include the Army Tactical Missile System and the newer Precision Strike Missile, with sources familiar with U.S. military data saying the Pentagon has used "virtually all" of both systems.”

I think the far right will move on this issue. Climate change is now undeniable, and it affects heavily those social segments that they claim to defend: the elderly, farmers, manual laborers. It’ll be something like “yes it’s real, but the jet-setting elite caused it and they should pay, not us.”
