I currently have someone checking the historical data, as there seems to be issues raised with how that’s been calculated. When this is finished, a more polished comparison of rates and use cases of urgency will be published. This will be a more editorial style. 2/2

Regarding the #nzpol Urgency Tracker: The 54th Parliament data is now frozen as a best-estimate. Errors previously raised regarding duplication and hashing issues have been addressed. The final numbers are below, however will be revised once the final sessional journals are made available. 1/1

I am sorry for undercounting this Parliament’s determination for skipping consultation. If you’re looking for a more technical writeup, that is coming soon, I just need to head into campus and take advantage of some better hardware. I may need to write some OIAs too. 🧵 x/x nzpt.cjs.nz/urgency/

Turns out that the scraper didn’t correctly handle weird spacings that had happened 18 times this parliament, meaning 8 bills had never been correctly counted (accounting for duplicates). 🧵 3/x

Urgency Tracker: Again the urgency tracker has decided to stop working. Here’s the current plan: - A patch for the urgency tracker should be out today, with the tracker returning to normal from next sitting day. - A new tool is in the works that tracks the Hansard for more than just urgency. 1/x

It has been a week and the Parliamentary Service have reformatted the way their sites work again. This is getting suspiciously repetitively coincidental.

cj sandall @cjs.nz · 10/05/2026
My points about the Radware are the equivalent of the National Library requiring a chicken costume to enter. There is no reason for the strictness of the protection software, all it does it make it hard for tracking applications to access the information regularly.

At least they’ve responded to you, they just ghosted me completely. I’ve been working on a project that analyses parliament video footage/house sessions and the entire way the website works is not great.

Yeah I assume they just don’t check the email account anymore I’d be curious to know who made the decision to add bot blocking to the platform, as there’s definitely external consequences

cj sandall @cjs.nz · 10/05/2026
Yeah the point isn’t too much that it’s hard to get around, more that the parliamentary service are blocking non-humans from reading an RSS feed (and the links within the RSS feed). Without the feeds, I have to scrape an entire webpage, and then use text filtering to find what I’m looking for.

I don’t normally write blog posts so excuse the poor writing, but I feel it is an important enough issue to share. Feel free to share this, or provide feedback, and if anyone knows someone at the Parliamentary Service who may have answers, please reach out #nzpol

I didn’t include in the blog post, but I first raised this issue to the Parliamentary Services on January 5th and have not had any acknowledgment since. It seems despite their website saying two business days, they just ignore the email.
