Regarding the #nzpol Urgency Tracker: The 54th Parliament data is now frozen as a best-estimate. Errors previously raised regarding duplication and hashing issues have been addressed. The final numbers are below, however will be revised once the final sessional journals are made available. 1/1

I’m so glad that they didn’t continue the trend of rushing everything under urgency so we couldn’t submit against it

Although parliament is still sitting for budget related urgency, here are the latest urgency stats (57% OF BILLS URGENT!). If you are curious why the stats are so much higher, keep reading this thread, I have something to admit ⤵️ #nzpol #aonz 🧵 1/x Source: @nzpt.cjs.nz

For the first time in about a year, the %age of bills urgent has dropped below 50%, with an all time peak of 58%. Budget is normally passed urgently, so this may not be true after this week. Source @nzpt.cjs.nz #nzpol #aonz

Awesome! Now about the paedophilia…
From AP News:

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV made a historic apology on Monday for the role the Holy See itself played in legitimizing slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory.”

Anyone from #auckland here? Can you explain to me how this works… I’m from Christchurch so my fare is $1.50 no matter where I go, but I have definitely never heard of on-the-spot legal fines from bus drivers before? #nz
Reddit Post:

Earlier today, I got fined $150 on the bus with the reason of not bringing my student ID with me on the bus (I forgot bcs i put it into my pencil case for a test last time) but using tertiary student discount. It’s upsetting but I’d probably just accept it since it’s my bad but the thing is, I am not supposed to have a concession discount anymore since I am only taking 3 subjects this sem. I already checked beforehand on the app and it doesnt show im on concession but I was still getting charged student prices, assuming it’ll just deactivate soon. When I got fined, I was a bit confused why it was still on concession but assumed maybe I was still eligible for it and that’s why the university hasn’t terminated it so that’s why I didnt argue my case with the ATHOP officer. But I checked at home and it says I’m not eligible for it, hence i shouldn’t be on concession. I thought it was my responsibility for cancelling the concession on my own but it says the university will cancel it by itself. So, is the fine disputable in this case?

Seems like it, although I’m sure the $300,000 donation to the coalition parties from Greymouth Petroleum has nothing to do with the Wildlife Amendment Bill. #nzpol #nz

After @taniawaikatolawyer.bsky.social posted about the use of urgency on Instagram, I was told that the reason for so much urgency is Willis balancing the budget. Needless to say, I ran the numbers and put it on NZPT, as well as added a search and filter option. ➡️ nzpt.cjs.nz/bills #nzpol

Historical data shows that this is (by far) the most urgency has been used since 2005. The next highest is ~40% by the 49th Parliament (Key 2008-2011) and then the 52nd Parliament (Ardern 2017-2020) at ~29%. #nzpol
Line graphs from NZPT showing urgency over time. An irregular spike at the 54th parliament is present with an overall trend upwards.

We are now 80% of the way through this Parliamentary term, and still more than half of the bills passed by the 54th Parliament have been rushed under urgency. The latest stats are live on nzpt.cjs.nz now. Do you think it will drop below 50%? #nzpol ⬇️🧵

This issue also seems to* have affected other tools such as WhereTheyStand. A bit annoying to start an election year this way. *A guess based on the timing of this notice on the webpage. I do not have any affiliation with the tool.

I am sure it is a coincidence, however a recent change to the Parliament website has blocked the calls that tools like NZPT use to get the information from the website. Currently this means urgency will be weekly-updates as a result. #nzpol
Screenshot of the NZPT homepage with a notice saying "Notice: Please be aware that the Parliament.NZ website has recently undergone changes which have affected the functionality of this urgency tracker. I am actively working on updating the tool to restore its full capabilities. Thank you for your patience and understanding. ".

Finally found a way to accurately count the amount of Bills the current parliament has considered (as opposed to using other sources and estimating). My estimates were too high, so update to NZPT soon with actual counts! #nzpol
A screenshot from an upcoming version of NZPT that shows a revised total of 177 bills considered by the current Parliament. With 104 being urgent, a percentage of 58.76% of all bills were urgent.

Yesterday I posted about my new web tracker of how often the parliament has gone into Urgency this term. #nzpol seemed to appreciate it and this evening I added a way to see the percentage of bills passed under urgency by each parliament. The results are interesting! See for yourself: nzpt.cjs.nz

The statistics also show that the 52nd Parliament passed 283 bills, 83 of which were in some part under urgency, meaning 29.33% of bills were under urgency.A screenshot of the NZPT urgency tracker showing that the 53rd Parliament of New Zealand sat for 226 days, 19 of those urgent, meaning 8.41% of sittings were disrupted by urgency.
