August 22, 1914. A day that conjures up horror for the French. 27,000 French soldiers will die in less than 24 hours. It remains France’s highest ever death toll in a single day, despite being followed by four years of brutal and bloody conflict. Carnage incarnate. #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar

Color painting (or postcard) of a dead French soldiers side by side being kissed by women in white (angels?). Behind them are wooden posts and desolation.

It’s a real shame that Nigel Farage is too unwell to do interviews the morning after Donald Trump threatens us with sanctions. Here he is with “the bravest man he ever met”. He campaigned to make Trump President, and has spent the last year enjoying all the chaos he has caused.

This is the memorial to the two US glider pilots and 31 glider troopers killed on 12 December 1944.

Yesterday, at Greenham Common Control Tower, a remembrance service was held to mark the 81st anniversary of a terrible glider crash on 12 Dec 1944 when a Horsa glider crashed killing all 33 on board. The service, organised by the RBL was well attended with USAF personnel from RAF Welford attending.

Ring of Fire is out now! It’s like the Guns of August for a new generation: the opening weeks of WW1 through the eyes of ordinary men, women and children. And not just in Western Europe, but across the globe. It was bloody, terrifying and neutrality was a sham… geni.us/RingOfFire

I downloaded the audiobook of this last week so I could listen to it whilst travelling to the @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social trip to Nieuwpoort. It’s an excellent account of the opening days of the war across the world & covers the brutality of this combat on soldiers & civilians alike. A must read.

We expect that some 50 Auschwitz Survivors will come to the Memorial for the 80th anniversary of the liberation. The eyes and ears of the world should rest upon them. We must safeguard their voices from silence, distortion, or being overshadowed. (Photo: buff.ly/4jd1BiU)

December, lovely views of Greenham Common from the former Air Traffic Control Tower. It’s now a heritage centre, focused on the airborne drops into Normandy by US forces, the Cold War bombers & Cruise Missiles as well as the protest movement. Aces High is just an aviation rework of Journey’s End, but a good movie. Going further back The Blue Max is okay. I think there may be a more recent film on Richthofen.
