I have heard rumours that Richard Tice heads a company called Britain Means Business, that has no employees and sells no products but takes in very large donations from foreign based people and forwards them to Reform UK Ltd. I can't believe this is true, but if it is it should bring down Reform.

Things that markets don't provide well include foundational knowledge that drives innovation, investments in the highest risk parts of the translation process, regulation to ensure that products do what they say, are safe to use, safe for others and safe for the environment. I could go on.

That last line really nails it. There usually aren't any consequences for abuse or sexual assault from men. The second an allegation is made, people start trying to come up with a reason why it's false or not applicable, even when the rate of false accusations is always much lower than the rate...

There is a bleak sort of pleasure in telling people who bring up AI in casual conversation, “Actually, I’m one of the authors AI stole from. Not an exaggeration. The judge ordered them to send me a check.” It hits them different when it’s a real person saying it.

This is an entrepreneur wanting society to take on the risk that justifies his share of the return on investment (Knightian uncertainty). Isn’t the logical response to nationalise the company so it is owned by those taking that risk?

The number of separatists in Alberta is very small, but every single one of them will vote in the separation referendum. It’s critical that everyone who doesn’t want separation votes as well, or else this could easily be Canada’s own Brexit moment. Don’t assume anything. Vote.

To establish the nature of the problem. Did 400 people leave in disgust or did 400 people leave because they had achieved their desired objective. If the party wants to call an extraordinary conference to address what could be a catastrophic issue, understanding what happened is important.

A card for the R package webrarian. Large text reads "A folder in. A website out." On the left, a small card lists a folder named lab-01 holding lab.R, setup.R and a data folder. A red arrow points from it to a browser window that shows a scatterplot of car weight against miles per gallon with brick-red points. The address coatless-wasm.github.io/webrarian is on the card.

On the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street (in which Jewish, left-wing and trades union activists battled police to block a fascist march), here's the mural unveiled in 1983 designed by Dave Binnington on the former St George's Town Hall to commemorate the event.
The work is inspired by the social realism of Diego Rivera, and the likely was influenced by the Depression-era murals of Philip Guston. Using a fisheye perspective, it shows the violent confrontation between police and protesters, with protest banners, punches being thrown, a barricade of furniture and overturned vehicle, police horse, Hitler (who was not actually present) being pantsed, and a police autogyro overhead. It uses the same artistic devices as Goya's The Third of May 1808 to evince sympathy for the protesters, showing them full face but a back view of the police
