I'M SO COOL (I am not cool) (but the @edmontonin2030.bsky.social bid party at @audreysbooksyeg.bsky.social was VERY COOL and I got to hang out with fronds Judy and Candas!)
me (a brown woman with black hair, glasses, and a colourful worldcon bid t-shirt) looking extremely cool, next to renowned author candas jane dorsey, in a light blue jean jacket over a black and white shirt, and next to judy lin, also renowned author, in a black and white sleeveless dress. the big edmonton in 2030 worldcon banner is behind us and behind that is some bookshelves, as we are at audreys books.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Canada's largest ice cream company used to source its fruits and nuts from U.S. suppliers — some for over 30 YEARS. Then, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian products. So, what did Chapman's do? They called Italy. They called Spain. They signed multi-year contracts with European suppliers.

On International Women’s Day it’s great to remember that Grunya Sukhareva identified Autism before Kenner (100 years ago), identified that Autism presented regardless of sex, and that it is a spectrum. Examples from Wikipedia:
A 12-year-old who had taught himself to read at age five. He was physically awkward and preferred talking to adults instead of children. He was very interested in philosophy.
• A gifted violinist who struggled socially.
• A child with exceptional memory of numbers but with face
blindness.
• A child who had imaginary friends that lived in a fireplace.

Love this from Guillermo del Toro
“Be kind, be involved, believe in your art,” he said. “At a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always the prelude to fascism. When they tell you it doesn’t matter, when they tell you a fucking app can do art you say, if it’s that important, why the fuck do they want it so bad? The answer is because they think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human. And that, in my book, and in my life, includes monsters.”
