Cyclists in the Netherlands take 300 million day trips and 5.85 million overnight trips per year, generating €3.6 billion for the economy and supporting 39,000 full-time jobs. Across Europe, cycle tourism accounted for 28% of the bike industry’s total economic and employment impact. bit.ly/47Gy7VU

I’ve hauled a ladder on my own cargo bike, and contractors in the Netherlands do it every single day. The limits of what's possible aren't dictated by the physical capability of the bike, they're dictated entirely by the quality of your infrastructure.

Yes - we need some outcomes defined for the law/ rules to catch up with: - Simultaneous greens - 4-way zebras at crossroads (20mph, neither a main road) - International triangular give way markings - Vienna convention zebra crossing signs

The Great North Road, outside Hatfield Station with its curious all arms toucan crossing and diagonal pedex. UK rules don't allow the diagonal to be toucans because cycles are vehicles and there would be vehicular conflict. Definitely a rule we'd change if we ran things! #FridayFun
A photo of a signalised cross roads viewed from one corner of a plaza over to a pub on the other side.

All four arms can be seen and they have single stage toucan crossings. Diagonal crossings can also be seen, but these are pedestrians only.

It will be good to have a London-wide system, but we need hundreds and probably thousands of on-street parking bays across the Capital. We might know a little bit about how to select sites and get them delivered ;)

Vredenburg: A Busy Street Without the Cars
Objectively, Vredenburg in Utrecht is a very busy street. And yet, when I give guided tours, some people keep telling me that I have no idea what a really busy street looks like. What do they mean? Probably that, in their mind, a street cannot be busy when it does not have private cars. There aren't any here now. But it wasn’t always like this.

Instead of simply copying Dutch design, Tallinn has borrowed a key principle: design the street for the behaviour and activities they want to encourage. In Kalamaja, that means slower traffic, more biking, walking, and greenery; and a place that feels less like a road and more like a neighbourhood.🔚

Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.

Cycling by numbers, straight through ’s-Hertogenbosch
Numbered junctions are a great way to navigate the cycling network in the Netherlands. I have explained how the system works before, but I had never shown how cycling by numbers works in practice. That changes today, with a ride through my hometown ’s-Hertogenbosch. In the Netherlands it is called the “Fietsknooppuntennetwerk”. Long compound words are a thing in this country!
