The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

Think about Miss Piggy. She lost a best friend and now an ex-lover in matter of 24 hours.
Miss Piggy and Dolly Parton in fancy dresses posing together photo of Tim Curry surrounded by muppets, smiling for a photo. A quote from curry is added “it didn’t go very well. It didn’t survive the shoot. She felt I wasn’t being faithful to her” it’s him discussing his ill fated affair with miss piggy

Tetanus is returning. In the 1930s, Tetanus was widespread in the US. The development & deployment of vaccines reduced annual cases from ~ 600 in the 1940s to 17 in 2020. Mortality dropped 99%. There is no cure for tetanus. We have forgotten how life was before vaccines. 🧪 archive.today/c6QVx

Tetanus is making a comeback. There’s an easy way to fight back.
It's easy to dismiss, but more Americans died from tetanus last year than any year in nearly two decades.

i get the sense that a lot of people don’t know that the term “ethnic cleansing” isn’t limited to mass murder. mass deportations targeting a race/ethnicity/nationality counts too. and we’ve been doing that for over a year now and our politicians won’t call it what it is

Healthcare is being dismantled & is increasingly inaccessible due to cost. Flu season looms & COVID levels are rising. Illness most impacts marginalized groups who have higher risk of serious outcomes & fewer resources. Wearing an n95 in public is an act of resistance & community care.

I knocked my water bottle over and didn't realize it had seeped into Dad's pill case until 6 hours later. I spent hours extracting wet pills and deciding which could dry and which were garbage, and texting the hospice nurse to get the important ones replaced 😭😭😭

Three panel comic titled Unethical Fiction:
1. Made with AI
2. Printed on human skin
3. The author uses their profits to fund a hate group.

this is why keeping corruption out of government is not some sideshow, it’s fundamental to effective governance if you cannot trust the people in charge of public health because “they changed their story due to bribes” is a legitimate inference, that is a crisis all on its own

Not quite a week later and we're all working on reassembling our realities. The hospice folks have been very kind but quite light on actual info until 2 days ago. It's a big relief to understand a little more but still very scary to know a lot.

Day 3 back and I still feel completely at sea, and I'm genuinely not sure if my parents understand what's going on. Maybe it's a polite fiction so they don't fall apart, but maybe they really don't know or can't let themselves know? I'm having a hard time navigating it.

I just want to add, since this is breaking containment, that this can't be made right. these people, each one a whole universe, are gone. there can only be justice for the perpetrators; public remorse & restitution; & reform to ensure future aid systems are more just and less prone to imperial whims

Thin people feeling insulted isn't what's wrong with the BMI. The problem with the BMI is that it's designed around white men's bodies. The problem with the BMI is that it ISN'T A CLINICAL TOOL, it's a statistical one. The problem with the BMI is its use to exclude fat people from health care.
