American Democracy Might Not Survive a War With Iran
The United States is well down the road to dictatorship. Imagine what Trump would do with a state of war.

The decline of democracy is directly tied to the fall of reading, the rise of social media, the death of traditional news media, etc. etc. Couple that with AI, and the imminent death of student learning, and we're about to enter a serious dark age, from which humanity may never recover.

Build more independent passenger rail lines. Run regular services. Induce demand, while stopping to induce car demand. We know how to do it. There's just no political will or long-term thinking in this country.

Documents obtained via an FOI show the closure of the Ontario Science Centre wasn’t about safety—it was about spin. Engineers didn't recommend shutting it down. They called for repairs. The Ford government appears to have pressured them to say otherwise. www.canadianarchitect.com/draft-engine...

New documents reinforce that Science Centre closure was not supported by engineers
The Ontario Science Centre was shuttered on June 21, 2024, with the Ontario government claiming that a structural roof issue made it unsafe. New documents suggest that the engineers inspecting the roo...

Kurt Vonnegut man
Kurt Vonnegut tells his wife he's going out to buy an envelope:
"Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man.
You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet?
And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope.
I meet a lot of people. And see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by.
And I give them the thumbs up. And I'll ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know. The moral of the story is — we're here on Earth to fart around
And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And what the computer people don't realize, or they don't care, is we're dancing animals. You know, we love to move around.
And it's like we're not supposed to dance at all anymore."

Canada sits at a hinge point of history, and we will need to reimagine the country to deal with our new reality, and it is bewildering that every party, and every leader, is pitching tax cuts. Our would-be leaders need to rise higher to meet the moment. www.thestar.com/politics/pol...

Bruce Arthur: Canada’s next leader needs a bold vision to reimagine the country itself — but no one is meeting the moment
We must reinvest in this country in a way we haven’t had to in generations, and we need leaders who truly grasp the magnitude of the task, Bruce Arthur writes.

On Saturday, thousands of women from across 16 cities in Québec including Montréal formed a human chain to protest Trump and Elon Musk.
Protesters chanted "shame on you" on the doorsteps of the U.S. Consulate. It was one of more than a dozen demonstrations held across Quebec to mark International Women's Day and denounce the American government's attacks on women's rights and Canada's sovereignty.
In Montreal, many wore red, symbolic of both blood and love. Some donned signs displaying the Canadian maple leaf. A few wore robes reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale, a dystopian novel in which women are subjugated by the governing regime.
Others carried signs comparing U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to that of Nazi Germany. Protesters locked arms as eight minutes of Silence was observed.
In a message addressed to Trump, Vice-President JD Vance and Trump ally Elon Musk, protest organizer Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette denounced the U.S. administration. "You are not kings. We are not handmaids," she said.
