“Ladies in Retitement” (1941) – one of my all-time favorite thrillers. Wonderful cast that includes Louis Hayward, Evelyn Keyes, Elsa Lanchester and is headed by Ida Lupino in her personal favorite role. Great atmospheric direction by Charles Vidor and cinematography by George Barnes.

We’re told not to speak ill of the dead, which is absolute nonsense. The only people concerned about this adage are those who are afraid to be spoken about when they die. “The evil that men do lives after them,” wrote the Bard. “The good is oft interrèd with their bones.” Pain and suffering are for the living; the dead have neither worry nor working ears.

“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” makes a valid argument for speaking ill of the dead, especially if it bucks this respectful tradition by revealing the harm they caused while living. In this case, we’re speaking of Uncle Fred, a much revered family member whose crimes were barely discussed when he was alive, let alone mentioned after he suddenly dropped dead. His death should bring about a reckoning, but this is a film about the kinds of lies we tell ourselves and the generational harm they cause.
