A possible new/undiscovered stone row on Bodmin moor aligning on the platform cairns of East moor. East moor already has one stone row, running north/south. Here are two of three stones, of a similar type (low, flat, ridged in one case), that run east/west. #Cornwall #StandingStoneSunday
A small, flat ridged rock protrudes from the tinder dry undergrowth, on a gorsey moorland. A low rocky peak breaks the horizon. The ridge that forms the ring echoes a ridge found on an identified standing stone on that distant peak.Drought has drained the pool and shrunken and cracked the mud to expose either a boundary marker or standing stone that aligns perfectly with the first stone pictured and the platform cairn distant ridge. A third unpictured stone make up the ‘row’. Gorse forms small bobbles which obscure the wider landscape and other stones from each other.

In la forêt de Toulfoën, this recumbent ‘menhir’ was raised in 1957 by the office du tourisme. Its provenance is dubious, but it symbolises the pardon of the birds, an ancient bird market held at the edge of the forest. #StandingStoneSunday #Britanny #Bretagne #Breizh
A 4-5m tall lichen topped, bullet shaped menhir with a small cave like indent at the base. It is surrounded by deciduous trees and the late afternoon sun is peeping through and threatening to flood the image with light.

The Devil’s Arrows from a walk in sub zero temperatures in January 2022. When I saw the BBC article www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... I thought the cross in Aldborough looked familiar and that’s because it had been part of the same walk! #StandingStoneSunday
The fourth Devil’s arrow looks like an underfed version of the other three, standing conspicuously on a verge of mowed grass in a village centre. Red brick houses line the streets and an old fashioned lamp post stands just behind giving a skewed sense of scale. The cross itself stands on a plinth with little brackets protruding from it near the top. The sky is a dismal lonely grey that promises nothing but winter. Two Devil’s arrows stand in a plough field, one in the foreground daubed in lichen, the other in a hedge with a leafless tree sprouting up behind it. A dank mist smudges the horizon out of existence.

Excellent recovery, hope it’s been plain sailing. I managed a 5k in 24.10 earlier this month, physio signed me off 2 months ago saying recovery had been amazing. Hope yours has been similar.

Butterflies photographed on my recent travels across Spain and France. Nothing earth shatteringly unusual, but nice to see, a Brown Argus, a Sooty Copper, a Grizzled Skipper and a Tree Grayling. #Butterflies #BugSky #NatureSky #Insects

The Dolmen de la Cap Pouech in Ariege, France. There are only 15 identified dolmens in the Ariege, this one above Mas d’azil is one of the finest. #TombTuesday
Three support stones spring from brown leaf litter to raise a wrinkled capstone. Behind in the greenery, a tree provides a somewhat folk horror backdrop and above that a branch provides an unintentional arc like the top of a stained glass window framing the forest and dolmen.

One of the most charismatic British butterflies, Silver washed fritillaries often float in like they own the place, scattering all before them, not adverse to chasing bees and wasps too. #ButterflyWeek #Butterflies #Insects #BugSky #Cornwall

For Tuesday, let’s have the under appreciated Ringlet. One of the stalwarts on my transect, keeping me on my feet for identification amongst Meadow Browns. One week a year we get blooms of 100s in an uncut field near us. #ButterflyWeek #Butterflies #Insects #NatureSky #Cornwall
A brown and slightly chewed looking ringlet, weak coffee brown coloured wings dotted by five small golden rings around a black centre surrounding a whitish dot.

On my transect zero (woodland doesn’t seem great for them) BUT on my local dog walk there was a mini bloom of 5 or 6 that lasted a couple of weeks. I’ve seen at least 10 but probably not as many as 20. But definitely more than the last 2 years, but yes still worryingly low

I’m the transect walker (surveying butterflies at Golitha Falls #Cornwall ) since 2023. 2024 = awful, 2025 = ok, so far 2026 is better again, and one of the species having a great year is the red admiral. Strong flyers, feed on nettles, always striking. #ButterflyWeek #butterflies #Bugsky #Insects
I took this photo of a red admiral nectaring on bramble in 2020, and it’s still my favourite one. White spots on the top of the wing, red bands clearly visible as is the beautiful mottled black, red and white underwing,

Right, I've been given free reign to "host" a butterfly week hashtag if I so wish. I've no idea what this entails, other than bigging up butterflies sharing posts and commenting. So if anyone is up for a #ButterflyWeek fest beginning on Monday, like, share and comment on this post, if you fancy. 🦋😀

Cowper’s cross on Ilkley moor, a 16th/17th century cross (although I see 12th century also mentioned without attribution as well as possible Christianised menhir) that stands beside an old Roman road. #StandingStoneSunday
A sturdy rectangular cross on a more recent square base, stands on bare grass under a mottled grey sky. You can see heather on the moor behind it, and further moorland peaks on the horizon.

A fresh bright orange gatekeeper butterfly on a bramble leaf.A rarity in this part of Cornwall (I only know of Saltash where they have them). A marbled white from a small colony in St Cleer that has appeared in this farm field that has been left fallow for a couple of years. Here seen feeding on knapweed.Large Skipper ahoy, on a bramble leaf, with enough showing of its distinctive chequer board pattern on the wings to safely identify. A colony exists in the same field as the marbled whites.Ringlets are having an incredible year, here is one feasting on a bramble flower while a horsefly feasted on my calf. I have seen clouds of them in the local fields, outnumbering even the meadow browns.

I notice the English heritage board said they were once standing (no mention of the lack of post holes ) and as soon as I walked in it felt like, no these stones are all meant to be lying flat. I know some recumbent circles once stood, but I’d argue this one looks arranged rather than fallen.

45 years after my father, who would have been 100, proposed we visit Arbor Low, I finally made the trip, on my own. Photos don’t do justice to this stunning recumbent (and to my mind intentionally recumbent, no post holes) stone circle, one of the UK’s best. A magical place. #StandingStoneSunday

Less than 6 months after an op to reconstruct my patella tendon after fully rupturing it ( 6 weeks in a brace including sleeping in it), I’m delighted to be allowed to complete a parkrun. Wasn’t certain at the time of injury if I would be able run properly again. Amazing turnaround #RunSky #Injury

This post sent me down a early 90s rabbit hole - I'm assume you know about the band who were the precursor to Insides, Earwig? "Under my skin I'm laughing" was their lp, and 10 minute epic "Every Day Shines" in particular is shimmering Reichian/Seefeel like oceanic drift.

I was writing a third issue of my fanzine (that never came out) and interviewed both at the time . Papa Sprain definitely more out there. Butterfly Child more acoustic and lasted longer and became more conventional. Joe Cassidy (Butteefly Child) died tragically early.

Interesting that the idea of another EU referendum is regularly discussed on broascast media as something that would cause division and thus a bad idea. But plans to deport literally millions of people are discussed as administrative questions.

Up country today in the capital, with a distinct paucity of menhirs, but this rock in the Dell agarden, Hyde Park is a little slice of Cornish granite and home. #Cornwall #StandingStoneSunday
A convincingly fake granite menhir sits atop a fake granite outcrop, that has been relocated from Cornwall, on a freshly cut lawn. Several species of exotic trees adorn the background and a little patch of cultivated garden is visible in the background. You can hear the waterfall in the background on a blazingly hot day.

A windswept Stripple stones, in low light, on an Archaeoastronomy walk. (Folklore + tales told by @cornishbirdblog.com ) Rough Tor on the left on the horizon, Bronn Wennili (Brown Willy) on the right. Do the tops of these stones echo the high peaks in the background? #Cornwall #StandingStoneSunday
A black and white scene containing two rectangular menhirs poking out of the marsh grass. The sliding incline of the top left mimics the rolling peak of a hill above it on the horizon and right hand one has a slight bobble on the top and a far flatter profile echoing the other peak on the horizon .

I totally agree. Look I wish there was a simple answer. Vote for the Blairite vacuum who as mayor has enacted some good policies and may have moved left (or maybe stood still long enough that he appears more left wing) or vote for the party with the best policies who almost certainly can’t win here.

I am not suggesting anything , I am simply pointing out that the progressive voters in this constituency need to choose a single party to back and beat Reform. Only one party is suggesting concentration camps for immigrants. French voters in the 90s had to choose between Le Pen and Chirac.

Sadly not. I know a Trump supporting Green and also an anti-immigration Green. In Germany the Greens previously ran on a restricting immigration platform. The wellness and Green movements often intertwine, wellness has some fascistic origins (and left wing too). Some Greens are very conservative.

All true, but the Greens or even Lib Dems cannot win here. (If you think otherwise Greens are at 390/1 on betfair.) the Labour Party still contains some progressive politicians (John McDonnell, Diane Abbott, Clive Lewis). The Greens were 2/1 for Gorton since day 1. Stop Farage first.

No. But I think Farage and his promise to intern immigrants in detention centres (concentration camps) before deportation needs concerted and unified opposition. I’ve seen the progressive vote split to let odious toe rags decade after decade. The right (and far right) always stick together.

My prediction was public a month before the election, I had the greens on 42%, labour were always running scared. The bookies always had the Greens as faves As for us greens I was arguing why we should do something about climate change and vegetarian since the 1980s. The left should stick together.
