The Devil’s Arrows from a walk in sub zero temperatures in January 2022. When I saw the BBC article www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... I thought the cross in Aldborough looked familiar and that’s because it had been part of the same walk! #StandingStoneSunday

The fourth Devil’s arrow looks like an underfed version of the other three, standing conspicuously on a verge of mowed grass in a village centre. Red brick houses line the streets and an old fashioned lamp post stands just behind giving a skewed sense of scale. The cross itself stands on a plinth with little brackets protruding from it near the top. The sky is a dismal lonely grey that promises nothing but winter.

The Dolmen de la Cap Pouech in Ariege, France. There are only 15 identified dolmens in the Ariege, this one above Mas d’azil is one of the finest. #TombTuesday

I’m the transect walker (surveying butterflies at Golitha Falls #Cornwall ) since 2023. 2024 = awful, 2025 = ok, so far 2026 is better again, and one of the species having a great year is the red admiral. Strong flyers, feed on nettles, always striking. #ButterflyWeek #butterflies #Bugsky #Insects

Cowper’s cross on Ilkley moor, a 16th/17th century cross (although I see 12th century also mentioned without attribution as well as possible Christianised menhir) that stands beside an old Roman road. #StandingStoneSunday

A fresh bright orange gatekeeper butterfly on a bramble leaf.

A rarity in this part of Cornwall (I only know of Saltash where they have them). A marbled white from a small colony in St Cleer that has appeared in this farm field that has been left fallow for a couple of years. Here seen feeding on knapweed.

Large Skipper ahoy, on a bramble leaf, with enough showing of its distinctive chequer board pattern on the wings to safely identify. A colony exists in the same field as the marbled whites.

Ringlets are having an incredible year, here is one feasting on a bramble flower while a horsefly feasted on my calf. I have seen clouds of them in the local fields, outnumbering even the meadow browns.

45 years after my father, who would have been 100, proposed we visit Arbor Low, I finally made the trip, on my own. Photos don’t do justice to this stunning recumbent (and to my mind intentionally recumbent, no post holes) stone circle, one of the UK’s best. A magical place. #StandingStoneSunday

Less than 6 months after an op to reconstruct my patella tendon after fully rupturing it ( 6 weeks in a brace including sleeping in it), I’m delighted to be allowed to complete a parkrun. Wasn’t certain at the time of injury if I would be able run properly again. Amazing turnaround #RunSky #Injury

Up country today in the capital, with a distinct paucity of menhirs, but this rock in the Dell agarden, Hyde Park is a little slice of Cornish granite and home. #Cornwall #StandingStoneSunday

A convincingly fake granite menhir sits atop a fake granite outcrop, that has been relocated from Cornwall, on a freshly cut lawn. Several species of exotic trees adorn the background and a little patch of cultivated garden is visible in the background. You can hear the waterfall in the background on a blazingly hot day.

The Merry Maidens stone row, near Wadebridge, #Cornwall . A wonderful set of quartz streaked menhirs that remains difficult to access despite its proximity to the road, because you either take your life in your hands walking the verge or scramble over brambles and barbed wire. #StandingStoneSunday

Before today’s transect there was a lovely brimstone moth on the front door. Then I had painted ladies and green veined whites dominate proceedings with a least black arches napping at the base of a tree. Today’s count higher than any transect I did in 2024. #Butterflies #Moths #TeamMoth #Cornwall
