#FantasyIndiesOctober 2: I don't watch a ton of spooky movies or shows, because my angel-wife doesn't like them. On the book side of things, I lean more towards horror comedy, and there, I'd recommend the works of both @rickgualtieri.com and my friend @dmguay.bsky.social!

#FantasyIndiesOctober 1: Hey everyone, I'm Chris Tullbane. I drink whisky and have 13+ books in the SF/Fantasy genres. My WIP is Breaker of Bonds, book three in my epic-fantasy-meets-LitRPG series, The (Second) Life of Brian. I'm 40k words in, with 150-160k to go. I've got to get a move on!

Since it's somehow already October, we should end September with a review roundup of three different series starters! Speaker of Tongues: epic fantasy meets slow-burn LitRPG Investigation, Meditation, Vindication: comedic urban fantasy See These Bones: grimdark post-apocalyptic superhero thriller

Speaker of Tongues
5 Stars: My first of this type of book, not my last

September 24, 2026 | Verified Purchase

I am VERY picky about my fantasy. High fantasy has to hook me quickly and keep the feeling, or I will not finish the story. I tend towards Urban Fantasy, because it is far easier for me to suspend my disbelief and relate to the characters. This was an entirely new genre, and the only reason I even tried is the author. I will read everything he produces, at least as far as I can see right now. I can't begin to tell you about the book without spoilers, so I won't try. Just grab it and read it. It's astonishing, and really really wonderful.

5 stars: Fun read about a not so average…average guy
September 26, 2026 | Verified Purchase

I enjoyed the humor. I’ve read other urban fantasy novels and this was a fast hight hearted read. I’ll pick up more from the series.

5 stars: Starts a little slow, and rapidly strides into Epic territory

September 30, 2026

Hi folks - this book was really a nice surprise for me. I had seen some online buzz about it and grabbed a copy. At first it was a bit slow and murky, but that really was nothing more than building a character and a setting for what became a fascinating dark superhero version of Harry Potter. Not at all what I had on my 2026 bingo card, but a definite pleasant surprise.

If you can't scam someone with a seven-line email, try a sixty-nine-line one instead, I guess? The 'good' news is since these scammers are relying on "AI" scripts to scrape the blurb and generate the email, it still only takes them a click of one button to waste my time.

I'm a simple man. I like cask strength whisky, I don't often wear pants, And when I eat a bag of savory snack mix from an airplane, I want the proportions of its contents to be roughly equivalent. And yet... 10.5 pretzels, 7 bread bites, and 2 (two!) rye bagel chips. A travesty of justice! 😂

A napkin, upon which the utter travesty that was this the savory snack mix bag's contents has been laid out for history and indeed the blind eyes of justice to witness for all time or at least until the collapse of bluesky and/or the heat death of the universe.

My hope is that readers will always be willing to give new authors a chance. That said, I think these days it behooves them to be careful about it. A new author with a handful of books out is perfectly normal. But, if someone's been around for under 6 months, yet suddenly has dozens of books...
