Long after our bones have turned to dust and the writings of the so-called “classics” have been forgotten, the bards will sing of the chronicle of Deadpool and Wolverine. Mirabile dictu.

After owning it for months, I’ve finally sat down & started “The White Pedastal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate” by @curtisdozier.bsky.social. Only in ch. 1, & already considering how I can incorporate much of this language w/ my own Latin classes/students

This year is the first year in forever that I am seeing two movies in the theater. And it's weird that both of them have Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in them.

Maybe everyone just misinterpreted him when he came back after dying. Maybe his name is actually “Gandalf the Wight”

I’m super bummed Wolverine isn’t coming to PC. I really was looking forward to this game: he’s my favorite superhero! But I’m still not buying a PlayStation, Sony.

Oof. I wish I bought a steam deck last year.

As the school year winds down each year I have lots of ideas about why I want to do with my students the next school year… But when it comes to sitting down to do the work to implement them I just crumple into a puddle and, like a toddler, yell “ I don’t wanna!”

It's been about six months, and it's almost my birthday, so I'll re-mention my commentary on some of Martial's epigrams. If you are a Latin instructor or student and would love to read some of Rome's funniest short poems in Latin, please give it a look/review. a.co/d/e1FBrHH

Off from school due to a storm, so it's time to sit down with my newly arrived "Martial's Rome: Empire and the Ideology of Epigram" by Prof. Victoria Rimell both for pleasure and research into my next reader!

Tomorrow we start Pliny the Younger's spooky ghost letter!

@playstation.com This post likely won't change anything, but I'm still gonna let you know how incredibly bummed I am at the news that Wolverine may not port to PC. I'm on PC & won't be buying a console; but I can't overstate how much I wanted to play this. Really loved the Insomniac Spiderman games

My favorite love song remains “If the government could read my mind (they’d know I’m thinking of you)” by the Vandals.

I have the flu and my favorite video game ever, Diablo 2, releases a new class of the first time in over two decades?! Staying home sick just got better!

It’s fristrating how many Latin commentaries written more than sixty years ago (some centuries) are only available in expensive book form. The authors can no longer be compensated & I’d really like access to the work to help my students and enrich my own knowledge.

120

Christopher @christophicus.bsky.social · 26/01/2026

I'm fairly bummed that my alma mater, UNC, doesn't have a single mention of Martial in their entire Latin catalog of courses. I get that he isn't writing seeping epics of history narratives, but he's one of my favorite authors to do with my high school students!

Ok, I need to escape from reality for a bit. Star Trek 2009 isn’t my favorite Trek, but it will do. Let’s punch it.

Time for a Secession of the Plebs.

So true. I have trouble even getting friends and family to leave a review.

Well my sister apparently makes too much for Medicaid. Hopefully her ex will put the kids on his insurance, but he hasn't been great when it comes to their health. And she will simply have to buy her own, which she can most certainly afford. Anyway, we live in a good country.

Anyone have any good recommendations for commentaries on Horace? I’d like to expand on what authors we spend time on in class.

I wish I knew more languages. I keep coming across footnotes referencing a book or paper I’d like to read…only to find that my American education has left me far too monolingual. I’d like a system that both compensated academics for research and made that research more accessible.

Christopher @christophicus.bsky.social · 29/12/2025

I got to call John DeLancie on his cell (Q from Star Trek) and ask if he could speak to our local secular nonprofit an mention to him that I had a class at UNC with his son while we were both there.

Spring semester is fast approaching, and I really need to start looking at the new AP Latin curriculum, Pliny especially.

Christopher @christophicus.bsky.social · 23/12/2025

I thoroughly recommend this book! I learned so much and continue to reference it in my high school Latin classes, increased my class consciousness, and was thrilled to see my favorite professor from undergrad was the PhD advisor to @sarahebond.bsky.social!

Each time my silly Latin reader gets a sale I feel more grateful. I hope they are enjoyed and a decent resource.

Happy Thanksgiving

A four-panel meme from the animated show King of the Hill. In the first panel, John Redcorn, an indigenous man, responds “Yes?” while looking at a blond boy Bobby Hill in a classroom. In the second panel, Bobby looks confused and asks, “Are you sure it’s the white man who did all that stuff?” The third panel shows Bobby gesturing toward himself and saying, “Because I come from white people,” and the fourth panel continues with him saying, “and this is the first I’m hearing of it.”

My book is out! Medieval Responses to Ovid's Exile, with Cambridge UP @universitypress.cambridge.org. I am so grateful to the friends, family, colleagues, librarians and archivists who helped along the way. Nervous and excited to see it in the world! www.cambridge.org/core/books/m...

So in five years it will be time for the third cycle of Battlestar Galactica. Is anyone who does TV making sure this happens?

I keep finding errors in my commentary, despite looking over it too many times to count. At least most seem to be formatting now, rather than content.

Though I bought it a while ago, I finally started listening to The Garak Deep Space Nine novel "A Stitch in Time," written and narrated by Andrew Robinson, and oh wow I have missed more DS9. Garak truly is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.

Ok so I have to find a way to justify buying the new Lego Enterprise D as TNG is easily my first favorite tv show and a huge influence on me becoming a space communist.

Top new release?! I know it’s in a niche genre, but I’ll celebrate when I can these days. I’m so grateful to everyone who encouraged me along the way and to everyone who has purchased this!

“Where a poet might Rome” is a top new release on Amazon

I wish I had the ability to make playlists for TV shows on streaming services or have a "pick random episode of this TV show" button. I need some Star Trek, but picking an episode takes like half the time I set aside for it! Why isn't this just an option already?

My wife works at a primary care office and was trying to report fraud today...but the government shut down means the place you report fraud to the FTC is down. I know it isn't nearly the most important consequence of the shut down, but it's depressing that I keep finding out more of them.
