also. the thing people hate is not ‘the technology’ it is the tech industry. they hate move fast and break things. they hate having everything they say tracked and processed while companies do whatever they want. they hate every single ideological value that animates silicon valley

The entire industry has changed user prompts from 'Yes/No' to 'Yes/Maybe Later' and it's just a poignant micro example of the direction the industry has taken towards pushing everything upon users whether they want it or not, whether it's useful or not, whether it's functional, safe, or even harmful

huge fan of the "give the means of creating software to the 4 companies making the models (3 of whom were part of the tech oligopoly before this all started)" as a way of somehow breaking tech monopolies

so far these are the big real uses of AI 1. Analyzing huge data sets better than we could before 2. Automate hacking and malware to an unprecedented degree 3. Supercharge fraud beyond all prior precedent 4. Flood the internet with slop / disinfo Where's the change in our very nature?

"people are anthropomorphizing LLMs because they are so astonishingly good at processing human thought and language" people will anthropomorphize a chair if you put the stitches in the right place.

And that's a huge change! It's going to change a lot of things. But the most visible and impactful change to most people is that we'll all suffer way way more fraud Still zero reason to believe it'll cure cancer or figure out interstellar travel.
