Offset shills: "a strong ACCU market w increasing prices over time [..] Investors & landholders need confidence there will be demand in the future" But "The only reason a country needs to create more ‘carbon offsets’ is because it expects to fail to decarbonise." (👀@louisemorris.bsky.social 👇)
Screenshot of a LinedIn post from Growing Australia's Nature Economy (GANE)

Australia has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring more private investment into climate and nature projects and build on the benefits these projects are already delivering across the country.

That was the core message from our recent roundtable with Assistant Minister Josh Wilson MP. Environmental markets can play a much bigger role, but investors need confidence. That means credible outcomes, clear and consistent policy and, above all, a strong Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) market with increasing prices over time.

These projects require significant upfront investment and commitments that can last for decades. Investors and landholders need confidence there will be demand in the future and that the rules won't keep changing. Strong compliance markets provide that demand, while voluntary investment from businesses, investors and philanthropists can help fund new ideas and projects beyond what regulation requires. We need both.

Government also has an important role to play. Good environmental markets need credible methods, science, data, measurement, registries and regulation. They also need trusted organisations that can connect landholders with science, policy and investment, including Landcare Australia, First Nations organisations, agricultural groups and natural resource management organisations.

As the Nature Repair Market develops, we should build on what Australia already does well. Accounting for Nature, Reef Credits and other credible voluntary initiatives have created experience and expertise we can use rather than starting again from scratch. One particularly important point came from First Nations participants, who increasingly talk about "core benefits" rather than "co-benefits". Cultural, social, economic and environmental outcomes aren't necessarily extras attached to these projects. They can be fundamental to their value.

Environmental markets aren't the whole answer. Australia cannot offset its way to net zero. We need to reduce emissions and draw carbon from the atmosphere, alongside conservation, regulation and community action.

But markets can do something incredibly important: bring private money into projects at a scale that government and philanthropy cannot achieve alone.

The opportunity is there. The job now is to create the confidence needed for that capital to flow.

SpaceX is going to spend $2.8 billion on new fossil fuel power stations for its data centres www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/spac...
SpaceX plans $2.8bn gas turbine spend, despite lawsuits
xAI has faced criticism for powering its data centers with polluting natural gas turbines.

It has faced multiple lawsuits from environmental and civil rights campaigners over the last two years, with the groups alleging the company’s rapid deployment of gas turbines has occurred without the correct permits and in violation of the Clean Air Act.

The latest case was launched by civil rights organization the NAACP in April, accusing xAI, and its subsidiary MZX Tech, of illegally running 27 methane gas turbines that power Colossus 2.

However, the controversy does appear to have deterred xAI from using natural gas. The IPO document said the company has deals in place to acquire new turbines worth $2.8bn. This includes a $2bn contract with an unnamed vendor agreed on April 30, which is expected to close later this month.
