I'd never read this before! A gift from @medievalmarginalia.com so long ago that I should be ashamed. My #sundaysentence, one day early (flying tomorrow): "Life without sinning was like food without salt, pure but tasteless."

We are a cruel, barbaric country, and the taking of a life is evil, and the taking of a life by the state is a monstrous evil, and as long as we continue to do it we will continue to be a cruel, barbaric country

My #sundaysentence this week is from Gertrude Stein in 1940; I love this discarding of the given and ownership of what you make your own: "And so I am an American and I have lived half my life in Paris, not the half that made me but the half in which I made what I made."

I'm a shameless sucker for a good spy thriller, especially if Russians are involved. My #sundaysentence this week is from Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews: "If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one." (Went from this novel right into the sequel and it was pretty good, too.)

Guys, my buddy Gail has a new book out and I must insist you go get it right now, today, immediately. It has it all: Medieval British Jews! Murder! Brave Children! And she wrote “Ella, Enchanted,” so c’mon already, what more can I say. #booksky

Really cool feature about Jack Johnson in the NYT had this perfect quote from Ben Harper, describing Jack (& artists in general, I think). It's my #sundaysentence this week: "It takes a great deal of intensity to actually sound simple and pure."

As happens sometimes with great books, in the midst of reading something so removed from my own experience, I find myself revealed on a page: my #sundaysentence: "This is the life I have made for myself, always striving for something beyond my grasp, while hauling implausibly complex armfuls."

The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.

Cooking from one of the Zahav books is generally even more masochistic than Ottolenghi, but after a few months I foolishly forget the pain and try anyway. Although this one looks reasonable…plus we have fresh local honey this week!

This novel was on my tbr for a very long time, but I just didn't enjoy it. High expectations; I liked another one by him. Still, we get a #sundaysentence: "Proof, once again, that reality was not objective, but always waiting to be reshaped and redefined by one's attitude."

Fun fact, this is one of my top 20 fave novels, I pull it down every few years. I see the gaps & cracks I didn't when I was 13; doesn't matter. Anyway, my #sundaysentence is a contemplation of emotional bumps in the road: "You'll never get anything done if you walk around with an unchipped heart."
