Been a few years since we’ve done the Thanksgiving trip to Yarmouth. Nice day yesterday at the Bunker’s Island Bug Light. Windy. Saw a seal sunning on a rock.

We’ve been ignoring the growing need for students to work near full time hours and do full time studies simultaneously. That has contributed to poorer academic outcomes and incentivizes shortcuts like LLMs. It’s a mess.

I filled in for our chair a few years ago at a deans council meeting and was a bit taken aback at how several senior admins thought the solution for PhD students to combat the affordability crisis was more roommates. At that stage a PhD student should be able to afford single living.

The 5 Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most off the top of my head: 1. Up and At Them (in slow R. Wolf castle). 2. You gotta help us doc. We ain’t tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas. 3. You don’t make friends with salad. 4. I’m in danger! 5. I have a ball. Perhaps you’d like to bounce it.

Journal editors, advice please? Editorial staff used to be able to tell me the day, time, and time zone that an accepted manuscript would be published. But now, “that isn’t possible”. For papers with big policy implications, knowing the exact date it will appear online is really important... 1/2

This isn’t a one-off experience (either previous or recent/now) — multiple journals, editors, papers. It’s particularly perplexing with society journals for research directly related to enviro policy & practice… and support comms. Editors, what can I do? 2/2

Moreover, literature suggests retention comes from RRNE. Repetition, Recency, Novelty, and Emotional Response. There is a place for mixed modality of delivery that integrates these provincial in pedagogical approach.

Full disclosure, I skimmed this opinion piece. But even in that skim the author appears to be arguing what I would call a false binary. What about blended learning or semi flipped classrooms? I record prep lectures and have active learning in person and often see improved attendance and outcomes.

Back to my long-running project of upgrading the style on my old river maps from the ca. 2010 style (for a book I never printed) to the more colorful poster style I've been using since about 2020. somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/river-maps/
A stylized map of North American rivers. Everything is constructed of 45° angles, like a classic transit map. The background is a series of pale greens denoting each country. The rivers are dark blue and highly simplified, with tick marks indicating where cities are along the rivers.A stylized map of North American rivers. Versus the original, this one is more colorful and the text is a clearer and cleaner and in a different typeface.

To be fair, though, aren’t those flags a community driven project and not a municipal program? It underscores the lack of priorities the city puts on pedestrian safety and the measures residents implement to cover the gaps even if an imperfect tool.

Although I was exposed to GIS very early on in my undergraduate degree, Fall 2025 was the first time that I actively began studying GIScience. That’s actually is close to my GIS class(es) structure. Three prep videos at about 20 minutes each. About 60-70 minutes as in class active learning where we work through simplified examples, discuss and answer questions. Then lab section later in the week. Works well with 3rd/4th year undergrads.
