I was thinking about Neuromancer and the distinction between constructs like Dixie Flatline — an LLM with the memories of the real dead hacker — and the AIs ‘Neuromancer’ and ‘Wintermute’ — which have artificial general intelligence. Anthropic et al. are selling Dixies like they’re Wintermutes.

really underrated bit in Coyote vs Acme is that Will Forte seems to be doing a straight up Phil Hartman impersonation in the TV ads for his law firm

i'd say "pay attention to who has kind things to say about rod liddle, the racist pedophile, following his death" but to no surprise it is the entirety of the mainstream british press

To put it in even further perspective — Lockheed Martin produced both the spacecraft for the Artemis mission and the PRsM missile that shot tungsten pellets into an elementary school in Lamerd.

No for sure, not at all! You may have tried it already, but might be worth giving The Word for World is Forest a try as a last hail mary for Le Guin. It’s a lot pulpier and less “literary” than her other stuff but equally as powerful. I’d actually love to see a film of that one day

Her sci-fi and fantasy both? You might be more receptive to the other if not the one

It’s a good day to revisit this Ursula Le Guin quote. In the best possible reality, Earthsea would be the dominant fantasy series for children.
“I have no great opinion of [JK Rowling’s writing style]. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the “incredible originality” of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid’s fantasy crossed with a ‘school novel’, good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited.”

Anecdotally this is my experience locally in a small rural community, I know 30-40 folk who moved up here in the last 5 years They come with small kids, if you talk with them it’s because public services are better, the environment is better, universities are free, it’s for a better life

I have zero interest in whatever that discourse is because it is an absolutely killer idea for a ride, and (as you say) Disney parks fans have been rightfully demanding it for years

It’s also goofy and kinda absurd in a way so many Disney movies aren’t. Honestly no surprise it’s gotten a second life thanks to fans on the internet

Yeah for sure. If, say, Cinderella is 90% sentimentality and 10% laughs, Emperor’s New Groove is 90% laughs and 10% sentimentality. And while some classic Disney movies balance it better (Aladdin? Lion King? Hercules?) I do adore TENG for carving out its little niche at the end of the spectrum

chris heasman @chrisheasman.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
Aladdin is a good shout actually (although imo not quite as funny as Emperor’s New Groove, Robin Williams aside) I think maybe what sets Emperor’s aside from that — and Hercules — is that it’s almost entirely devoid of sentimentality. Laughs first, Disney magic second. Which I love!

Was The Emperor’s New Groove the first Disney animation to be an outright comedy? Like, the others had jokes, but they weren’t *led* by them

yeah, can’t really think of any privately funded anything that has benefited the common good tbh. thank you for the clarity on this - sad, but hopefully something changes one day. A small mercy that at least Terror has more time

sorry for the late intrusion here but - what makes you think it’s a funding issue? genuine question! I’m so baffled and distraught by PC’s decision to end dives down there, especially since so much remains to be seen. It makes no sense to me at all

TRUMP [after spending 5 minutes with Zohran]: surplus value, it’s a very wonderful thing, very wonderful, and they’re stealing it. Can you believe that? We’re going to be looking very strongly at the bourgeoisie, what they’re up to
