If they’re conducting a law-enforcement operation, they can go on regardless. So the only time we’d be charging them a fare is if they were just riding to get somewhere and I can’t imagine that happens very often.

If your religion says you can’t do something then don’t do it. Don’t get the law to force other people to conform to your religion. Muslims can’t drink alcohol but I’ve never heard of a Muslim going to the Supreme Court to get neighborhood bars shut down.

still thinking about the Montana knife maker who said you don't have to worry about tariffs if you buy american. and then three months later, he realized he imports swedish steel and german equipment. and even MiUSA equipment costs $100k more now because of tariffs

I know we’re doing some significant updates this year. With the rollout of tap to pay this fall, it also won’t be a problem for most people unless they have an Eco pass.

To be clear, we didn’t wave anything through last night. We approved a solicitation for a contract. In fact, thanks to director Paglieri, we expressly removed the automatic approval that was in the original agenda item.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️
Scatterplot titled “Empirical Evidence of Ideological Targeting in Federal Layoffs: Agencies seen as liberal are significantly more likely to face DOGE layoffs.”
	•	The x-axis represents Perceived Ideological Leaning of federal agencies, ranging from -2 (Most Liberal) to +2 (Most Conservative), based on survey responses from over 1,500 federal executives.
	•	The y-axis shows Agency Size (Number of Staff) on a logarithmic scale from 1,000 to 1,000,000.

Each point represents a federal agency:
	•	Red dots indicate agencies that experienced DOGE layoffs.
	•	Gray dots indicate agencies with no layoffs.

Key Observations:
	•	Liberal-leaning agencies (left side of the plot) are disproportionately represented among red dots, indicating higher layoff rates.
	•	Notable targeted agencies include:
	•	HHS (Health & Human Services)
	•	EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
	•	NIH (National Institutes of Health)
	•	CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
	•	Dept. of Education
	•	USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development)
	•	The National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE), despite its conservative leaning (+1 on the scale), is an exception among targeted agencies.
	•	A notable outlier: the Department of Veterans Affairs (moderately conservative) also faced layoffs despite its size.

Takeaway:

The figure visually demonstrates that DOGE layoffs disproportionately targeted liberal-leaning agencies, supporting claims of ideological bias. The pattern reveals that layoffs were not driven by agency size or budget alone but were strongly associated with perceived ideology.

There's an egg shortage in the bay area due to bird flu issues, and we've tried a few times to buy eggs in the last few weeks with no luck. I went to Costco this morning right as it opened and was able to buy some. But the woman in front of me loaded her cart with *53 cases* with 2 dozen eggs each.

Communication is not a first world problem. At a minimum we should be able to tell people what they’re gonna experience so that they can make the choices they want to make, even if that’s just letting people know how long it’s actually gonna take so they can call a loved one.

One of the very cool things about this case is that the court called one of the original framers of the MT state constitution to help interpret it because our constitution is only 50 years old and Mae Nan Robinson Ellingson was 24 years old when she helped write it.

Our society absolutely needs to do a better job recruiting women and people of color when things are going well. But our expectations shouldn’t change depending on who is in leadership. It’s completely fair to benchmark our success against our peer agencies.

Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 11/12/2024
Whatever. I do appreciate you standing up for the quality of RTD‘s work under GM/CEO Johnson. Too many people in the legislature take cheap shots at transit and it’s nice having someone publicly supporting the agency.

Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 11/12/2024
And respectfully, Senadora, that’s a category error. The point of the article was to report a story, it wasn’t to hold the GM/CEO to a particular standard. That’s the job of the board. And riders need RTD to deliver great service. When it lets them down, they don’t care why.

Yea it’s a great point. We need more investment to reach frequency capacity, which is hard when ridership is low. We need to focus on one line at a time. Speed is really tough to fix (physical and regulatory limitations). But we can be good enough for a lot of people.
000
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 10/12/2024
Yea that’s not remotely okay. If someone pays the fare (or has a pass) they get to ride as long as they respect other passengers. RTD is not a homeless shelter but every unhoused rider should be made to feel welcome on transit.

Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 10/12/2024
If I have anything to say about it, that will not be the case here. My model for this is Apple Security at one of their stores. They are friendly, wearing a polo shirt, and it’s very obvious you don’t want to mess with them.
000
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
Yup! They’re all on the same system.
010
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
That’s why we have the normal myride tap cards that are free.
110
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
Exactly right. And considering the cost of even the discount transit pass adds up to over $300 per year, that’s a pretty good reason
010
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
We wouldn’t even have to have people use the app, your credit card will work just as well as a token so people would never even need to fill anything out for us to track their usage.
110
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
Right now we give out books of paper passes at the shelters, which is a really dumb way of ensuring that people experiencing homelessness can use the system. We should give out year long Eco passes to people who can’t even afford the discount pass, and require them to follow the code of conduct.
130
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
We also shouldn’t treat people like potential criminals. A lot of that is just how you train staff to treat customers. We could also do things like give out lollipops or Starbucks gift cards or something when people hit a certain number of fare checks.
110
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
Good point. I’m not sure if there’s an easy answer there but we should try to find one. An obvious one would be installing validators at every seat that you can tap when you sit down to turn on a light that says that you paid. But that’s $$$.
110
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to spend the money to do that and everything would be super awesome, but we don’t have that luxury. And to get significantly more transit funding, average voters first need to like RTD.
150
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
So the solution is a massive non-police presence that can help people use the system, make them feel safe, collect fares, and enforce the code of conduct, with backup from police when necessary.
130
Chris Nicholson @chrisfnicholson.com · 09/12/2024
Dealing with the perception issue is frustrating but perception is reality at the end of the day. People are gonna choose RTD based on the perception they have of it.
