Today the Globe and Mail reports about American political operatives involving themselves in Alberta's referendum. This is, of course, wholly inappropriate. I want to provide some context to any American who sees an "opportunity": (🧵)

Happy Canada Day! Time to get worried about national unity and the coming referendum campaign. According to the weekly financial disclosures, federalists are getting absolutely creamed in fundraising. Separatists have raised 5x what federalists have. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/shannonp...

Happy Canada Day! Time to get worried.
Waiting for Alberta’s federalist Conservatives to get their act together for the referendum campaign is not a good idea. They don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

The Premier of Alberta intervened to lower the threshold for getting a separatist question on the ballot. She then intervened to eliminate a review requiring the question be constitutional. She intervenes again tonight after yet another court has told the separatists to slow down & follow the law. 🧵

Today we learned just how little the UCP thinks of Albertans. A staffer’s mistake revealed just how much they’re stage managing every step to force us into a vote on separation. Because, for the UCP, democracy is just a sham. A game. And they’re willing to gamble your future to win. #abpoli

This referendum violates treaty rights, it will cost Albertans hundreds of millions of dollars, and is now tied to serious public safety concerns thanks to the largest data breach in Alberta’s history. Nobody is above the law – certainly not this Premier or this separatist government.

Focusing on the one staffer makes sense for an opposition party trying to pin down the Premier on an issue that is becoming more difficult for her to dodge — but it misses the forest for the trees. I’m willing to bet that almost everyone on the Centurion Project zoom call is a UCP member.

Nobody ran on separatism. Or on lowering citizen initiative thresholds. Or on weakening Elections Alberta. Or having such a serious question be 1 of 10, added at the 11th hour. Albertans have been subjected to separatism by subterfuge.

Alberta separatists are 20% of the vote, 100% of the noise. They've railroaded us into a conversation that erodes business confidence and pits us against each other. Absent polls suggesting any chance Albertans want this, the Premier should shut the door to a divisive referendum.

Happy birthday to Mark Tewksbury, born on this day in 1968 in Calgary! In 1992, he won an Olympic Gold in the 100-metre backstroke, and a bronze in the relay event. He hosted the first season of How It's Made and is in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and received the Order of Canada
Colour studio portrait of Mark Tewksbury facing the camera and smiling broadly with teeth visible. He has short dark hair with grey at the sides and a neatly trimmed grey beard and moustache. He is wearing a black suit jacket, a white dress shirt, and a dark striped tie. A small lapel pin is visible on his jacket. The background is plain and light-coloured, with no other objects visible.
