I’d take the arguments about overcapacity more seriously if the US concentrated its tariffs on China, and specifically the overcapacity goods produced there, instead of on its erstwhile closest allies.

Latter. If this what spell check does, what is AI doing??

Here’s my question. Are all these AI proofs of long standing math problems being done through brute force, or through something like imagination? If the ladder, I’m very curious.

The US public has happily gone along with several huge Republican tax cuts, without ackowledging there’s a cost, increased deficits.

Good Reuters update on US bond market issues, but it neglects to mention there is another way out than cutting spending - raising taxes. What will Washington do next if US bond yields keep rising? - www.reuters.com/business/wha...

What will Washington do next if US bond yields keep rising?
The US government is paying more to borrow, and it is running out of easy ways to rein in its borrowing costs.

I thought this might be an exaggeration, but no! Despite all the talk of technology neutrality, it appears the permitting reform proposal would weaponize claims for federal damages — but in practice, only for fossil fuels.

Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.

A lot of us are refugees from resource extraction North America. I just hope the internet has made those places easier places to live for a broader range of people.

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

870 French households are disconnecting from the gas grid everyday. At the current rate the gas grid will be completely abandoned in 38 years. But the rate will increase. France is entering the gas grid doom loop.

Worth noting: MacDonald's first attempt a establishing a Canadian Pacific Rail line STARTED in 1873 (when he and other officials were bribed as part the Pacific Scandal). Final construction wasn't completed until 1886. 13 years, not 4. Then, as now, the delays were political and regulatory.

That guy needs a shrine, along with the political officer on a Soviet submarine that refused to allow the captain to use a nuclear torpedo on the Americans depth charging them during the Cuban missile crisis. To be fair to the Americans, they didn’t know the Soviets had nuclear torpedoes then.

Great thread👇 ASEAN, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the Iberian Peninsula have become something biggesrthan the earlier, resource orientated "Belt & Road". They seem to be the spine of a global #electrostate. But green FDI to the US is also surprisingingly large.

This is where we’re going to get into trouble. E-SAF by itself as a concept? Good. Negative emissions? Good. But unless you’re pulling down more CO2 from the atmosphere than is burnt as fuel, It’s not negative emissions because the CO2 is being returned to the atmosphere.

Also, recommend the rest of the thread. Renewables plus batteries are starting to have downward material effects on electricity prices, obviously conditional on the starting state of the jurisdiction.

I’m guessing this has a few implications for gigatonne scale BECCS, if it worked reliably in the first place. If we need to maximize food production while releasing unproductive land to reforestation, while growing enough biomass for chemical feedstocks, there probably just isn’t room for BECCS.

Yes, precisely. Investments made and built in efficiency, clean power, end-use electrification, hydrogen/CCS where necessary, mode/process shifting, land use changes across sector, rewinding combined with intensive agriculture, the list goes on and on.

I’m enjoying the smart responses to the idea climate action makes us poorer. Another not commonly discussed wrinkle is mitigation leads towards a relatively capital & labour heavy economy, which we can all participate in, vs a resource rent heavy economy, where only the rent owners benefit.
