Researchers from our Plaschka lab expected one molecular motor to dismantle the cell’s RNA-editing machine. Instead, they found three. Like three hands untying a knot, the motors act in sequence to take the spliceosome apart: bit.ly/4AQnqNQ

The head of the search comittee took me aside and asked me why I would continue to work on my cellular model of choice. I would fit so much better if I would also work on the model system everyone else was working on. This was after I received the offer. I declined. Both.

Can “jumping genes” spread like viruses? New research from the Brennecke lab at IMBA shows that, in fruit flies, certain transposable elements can break out of their own cell and slip into developing eggs—securing their passage to the next generation. Published in Cell: imba.science/4jdMuYQ

I really enjoyed "What We Can Know" by Ian McEwan. It reminds me of drafting a paper. All the information is there, but the reality- how you got there, which wrong turns you made, all that is not part of the story that is told in the paper. There are hints; if you read carefully, you find them.

About 80%, I saw my proposal as my blueprint for my lab: things I really wanted to do and questions that excited me. WE rejected some of the hypotheses, so while we worked on it, it was a dead end. But then other things came up, and we did correct course. You know, we scienced.

On my way home I go up a street where cars have one lane and the bikes share a lane with a bus and cabs while there are still cars parked left and right on those lanes. It is madness and I only cycle that right in the middle of "my" lane. Rarely a day that I am not cursed at by a cab driver.

My son's favorite thing to do in Amsterdam is to visit the Huttendorp in the Jeugtland playground. He shows up, they give you a hammer, nails and a saw and off he goes to play around with wood and build something.

I have a few more: set up clear guidelines how you want your lab to run. How to manage data, how to share data, how to document data. This sounds like a given, but people have their own systems and you might not find data once they left simply because it was not well documented.

Others have said it, but people are the most important part, they make or break your lab. And you can train them but you cannot change them.

Alois is one of the most dedicated and awesome teachers we have at the Perutz and @univie.ac.at. Every time he teaches his practical course, the students hang on his lips and learn so much. He is a treasure, and I am glad that we could show him some of that appreciation with this award.

I have a love/hate relationship with traveling for work. It is exhausting and takes you away too much from family. But then you have some of these trips that invigorate you and make you realize why you love your job. The conversations with like-minded people, making new friends and getting inspired.
