His eyes widen, and he raises his lantern to see his mother collapsed on the wooden floor, ghosts screaming around her. Her hair and skin have gone dead white.

A vampire man is laying in his bed, he jolts awake by a smokey dark ghost. The ghoul has hollow eyes and an elongated mouth that stretches down to it's chest in a silent scream. On it's shoulder grows a face of a woman, she too gapes in agony. The disfigured ghost is strangling the vampire, and the room spins and abstracts around the sleep-paralysis ghost. The panicked vampire man, now awake, grabs the ghost's arms to push its grip on him away.

The entity wears a rotting cloak of deer hide, from which clusters of purple flowers and bright orange mushrooms grow in equal multitudes. Their head is a deer skull adorned with antlers, and their fleshless hands are loosely clasped in front of them. Woodland animals cluster around their feet like ants. Birds flock around their antlers like flies. The entity regards a small humanoid figure in the foreground with their empty sockets.

Three panels comprise the page. In panel one, the entity addresses the small figure from the previous page. It speaks in a language we do not recognize. In panel two, the small figure huddles in the grass with a terrified upturned gaze. The shadow of the entity's horns fall on the grass around them. We see that the figure is a woman, drenched from the rainfall of the surrounding storm. Her skin and hair are dark, her ears are large and pointed, and the hand emerging from a torn glove end in claws. In panel three, the entity stoops closer to the small figure to get a better look at the woman, who flinches away. It is huge, enveloping, and thoughtful, but says nothing.

Dusk was falling in heavy blue; the last orange glow of the day lay low across the city as lights began to come on here and there in windows and on streets. A long musical chorus of bells rang out from somewhere, loud enough to carry across the city and into the bedroom. Teige cursed from under the covers.

"It's the feckin' evening bells already," he said irritably, and raised his horned head so that the covers fell back. Vlad, lying beneath him on the futon, rolled his eyes. Teige sat up, and Vlad propped himself up on his elbow.

"I've got to get back to the depot before the half past," Teige told him. "Sorry."

Vlad sighed. "Oh, it's not your fault my office hours ran over," he said. "Now I understand why Shinobu hated doing them."

Teige snickered as he pulled his shirt back on over his binder. "You've only just taken over her teaching, don't get jaded already. Besides," he added lightly, "ent it a little romantic? Sneaking a kiss and a quickie here and there like this?"

"Very glass-half-full, hon," Vlad said dryly, though he grinned.

"What's on the slate tonight then, Prof?" Teige asked. "You on with the du Cuppra?"

Outside, the street was empty but for clouds of tiny glowing creatures that drifted around, casting light where they went and clustering along cables that ran along the street. The sky close to the tops of the ivy-covered buildings was still deep orange. Vlad lit a cigarette as Teige shouldered a leather harness with a pair of messenger-style bags on either side of it.

"Yep. Luu and I will be in the south central districts tonight." Vlad flicked open his cell phone, checking the screen. "As soon as I run home for dinner and some chores first."

"Busy busy!" Teige murmured, arranging the harness around his neck so that the leather straps crossed in the center of his chest. Vlad closed the phone again and looked up just as Teige began to catch with a pale fire.

"What about you? Staying in?"

"Out drinking with Hawk, I've told yeh," Teige said. The fire illuminated a somewhat abashed expression that crossed Vlad's face then.

"Oh...right," he muttered. "Where exactly are you two going?"

The fire receded, and Teige was suddenly in the form of a huge black horse with a long shaggy mane and wide staring white eyes. He still managed to look put off. "No firm plans," he said. "Don't look so thrilled for me, either, eh. Not as if I've been looking forward to this all week!"

"Sorry, hon," Vlad said, grinning as he adjusted the harness around the horse's neck. "It's just that most of my nights out drinking usually ended in tears."

"That so?" Teige said brightly. "Most of mine have ended with running from the Gardaí."

"Well, try to avoid both tonight, okay?"

Teige rested his huge head on top of Vlad's briefly. "Ah, I'm not after that sort of time ennyway. A gorgeous fall night and two aul ones catching up--just a nice bit of normalcy after all this last year and some, that's all I want."

Vlad withdrew. "Fair enough. Go finish your shift and get to it, then."

"Spare us a peck first?" Teige asked, and then lowered his head so Vlad could plant a kiss on the bridge of his broad nose. "And be careful yerself tonight."

"I will," Vlad agreed, and Teige turned to go. "Enjoy your nice and normal boy's night!"

"Aye." Teige broke into a trot, heading up the stone street towards a little bridge that crossed a canal.

"And call if you get in trouble!"

"Aye," Teige repeated as he went. "Luv ya!"

At some point in time, at some place: three generations of pooka gather to eat cake, spin and dye thread, and then sit together sewing in a comfortable living room.

"I did not realize how much the spell meant to your family," Yoshi said.

"Oh, it doesn't," Teige replied offhandedly, picking up a bit of string that had been lying on the table. "The spell is dead simple, you've seen. It's the family tradition that's so damn important."

"Er, that's what I meant," Yoshi said uncertainly, watching as Teige looped the string around his fingers and passed it between them back and forth, forming different patterns as he went. "Your grandmother wouldn't be upset that you're teaching a total outsider this?"

"My grandmother doesn't speak to me anymore." Teige's tone was matter-of-fact, though he was looking at the string around his fingers rather than at Yoshi. "Me, or my mum. She disagreed enough with Ma divorcing my dad, but my being transgender was the last straw, as t'were. She expected Ma to disown me, but Ma didn't. So out we went."

Yoshi frowned a little. "...Disown...for being transgender?" she said, as though she didn't see the connection between the two. Teige had taken one loop of the string in his teeth and pulled it up gently, forming a sort of narrow triangle with a twist in the middle.

"Happens often enough," he said, keeping the string in his teeth. "Earth's a deadly place to be trans."

They descended on the interworld hub from above. In the morning sun, the large stone birds perched at either corner of the pillared white building were casting long blue shadows over the steps and ramps that led up to the entrance. Even this early there were the little shapes of people going up and down in and out of the building, or elsewhere on the sidewalks and concrete surrounding it. As Hawk fanned his wings and tail and landed easily on his feet near the tailfeathers of one of the great birds, he said, "You seem less nervous this time."

"I am!" Numair responded from his shoulder. "I admit, I think I'm actually beginning to enjoy flying."

"I thought you might if y'just gave it a chance!"

Hawk knelt then, and there was some fumbling as Numair tried to extricate his legs from under Hawk's wings, resulting in him half-sliding off onto the stone tailfeathers of the statue. He laughed and added, "But I'll have to work on a more graceful dismount."

He stood up on the tailfeather, with put him only just at Hawk's eye level. For a moment they looked at each other without speaking.

Finally, Numair began with great reluctance, "...Hawk, I..."

The shuffle of Hawk's wings stopped him as Hawk unfolded them again, curving them around himself and Numair, the morning light shafting in between each primary. Gently, Hawk took Numair's face in his hands and kissed him.

When he withdrew, he was practically holding Numair up--Numair had all but melted into his hands, the reluctance forgotten.

"Can I tell you somethin'?" Hawk asked. Numair simply made a noise of agreement, looking up into his face.

Hawk normally dwarfed Numair, but he seemed even more massive and looming now, despite being bent nearly double. His arms hung, the unchanged one trembling as blood ran down it from the cut on his shoulder. The sky had gone nearly black, and against it the impressions of many heads looked more solid, all glaring sightlessly down at Numair. His face was contorted with a terrible fury, such that Numair actually took a step back through the thick, electric yellow grass.

He said, through clenched teeth, "Say something."

Numair seemed to find his voice all of the sudden, and what came out was, "...All right, it's true. I am the Cynn of Aetheri."

Lightning struck so close and so loudly behind him then that he felt all of his hair stand on end, but he could still hear Hawk over the noise:

"I can't FUCKING believe this."

Hawk turned, and so did all the heads, snapping silently about his face. He was silent for an awful moment, and then muttered, "I'm so goddamn stupid."

He pushed forward through the tall grass past Numair, who cried after him, "Eh?! No--Hawk...!"

Hawk ignored him. He had a strange ghostly tail now as well, which left a trail through the grass. Numair made to follow, though the thick grass was nearly up to his chest now.

"Hawk, please," he called desperately. "I am sorry. I-I didn't think you would be so angry."

Hawk jerked to a halt, every feather standing on end. He turned back towards Numair, no less furious. "What...?"

Outside, it was dusk enough to make the skyline dark. Above it rose a huge statue of someone in a seated position, holding a disk in their hands, head and shoulders and even most of their cloaked torso visible above the tops of the buildings. They looked down with their eyes closed, a hint of a smile on their lips. Whatever the statue was made of seemed to take on the colors of the sunset, giving it an almost ghostlike effect against the sky.

Something equally pale coasted around the statue on broad wings. Hawk watched it for a while, silent.

Vlad's phone pinged again as Hawk looked back round at him.

"So, uh," he said sheepishly, massaging the muscles in his neck and shoulder, "I made a fuckin' scene earlier, huh? S-sorry."

"Don't apologize to me, hon," Vlad said lightly, not looking up from his phone just yet. "I'm just glad you're okay."

"Are you okay?" Hawk asked, somewhat awkwardly, because Vlad's nose was red against the paleness of his face, and he had a generally worn-out air about him. "You look like you been cryin'."

Vlad looked up at him then with a strange, sad expression, his shoulders hunched somewhat as if under some weight. He took a moment to respond.

"...When you were in the trade, did you ever hold out any hope of anyone rescuing you? Anyone at all?"

Hawk looked away, out the window again, and replied, "No. Never. Seemed too remote of a chance, y'know?"

Vlad followed his gaze. There were figures cavorting in the darkening courtyard below. "Yeah," he said, "I know."
