This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

This is not a slight at people discussing DIGGER, and it's not a plea for VERITY specifically. I just hope folks invested in DIGGER dedicate some energy to the stories aimed at women, too.

As a reception studies scholar, I can't help but see gender dynamics at play here. Why are cinephiles giving the auteur, male-centric story a chance despite critical backlash, but not reserving similar energy for the female-centric adaptation of a woman writer's (arguably) most beloved book?

The films both received similarly negative critical reception, and their Cinemascore and RT audience scores are practically identical. Yet I've seen lots of people argue that DIGGER is a misunderstood masterpiece, while I've heard absolutely nothing about VERITY.

It's easy to forget because we associate childhood with innocence and protectionism. However, horror is an essential part of any kid's media diet. Per Wes Craven, scary stories are a "boot camp for the psyche." They help train us to manage anxiety and fear as adults.

DIGGER is worth seeing, if only so you can understand all the discourse! It is a hot mess though 😂 CAMP MIASMA is a strange (and beautiful) experience given how corporeal the subject matter is, but it's also much more focused and cohesive as a film.

The fight for DIGGER's reputation is taking place as we speak, and it's easily the most entertaining film discourse of the year.
Photo of DIGGER's Rotten Tomatoes score, which is at 50% with 210 reviews.

If Andy Beshear can stand on trans rights in Kentucky, there's no excuse for the transphobia exhibited by Amy Acton in Ohio, James Talarico in Texas, and especially Gavin Newson in California. If a politician opposes trans rights, they should have no place in the Democratic party.

I lived in Texas for six years until fleeing in May, so I know how bad it is there for girls like me. Which is why I'm so angry that I can't in good conscience tell anyone to vote for Talarico anymore, since he's pivoting toward transphobia for no reason. His whole thing was being anti-bigotry!

Most people don't follow the Billboard charts or any "incessant news coverage" of it. Those same people don't know who Stella Lefty is, either, despite being at #2 on the Hot 100. "Choosin' Texas" is a fine song, but it's only a hit because the charts are deeply boring right now.

jeffrey katzenberg has done many a thing, but the thing I always think of is the story about him flipping out at the animators on The Black Cauldron after they had to explain to him that no, they could not in fact edit and re-cut an animated film like a live action one

This guy was never really that smart. He was often called a jerk by his peers. He worked at Disney before leaving because he felt self-entitled to becoming the company president after someone died and didn't get it. Guy often disrespected animation, trying to cut The Black Cauldron. Don't trust him.

While with hindsight, it’s obvious that Quibi was a video platform with no audience and a complete misunderstanding of short form content, it’s important for folks to know that, at the time… it was just as obvious that it had no audience and a complete misunderstanding of short form content.

I need to spend some time with Pocoyo! And I had a similar experience with Dexter's Lab. A lot of the late-90s and early-00s cartoons feel like they're part of one distinct time period, in part because reruns of the slightly older shows intermingled with the new releases.
