A beautiful translation by Emily Wilson, 2023. “I have often felt like the poor mortal horse, Jumper, harnessed alongside the immortal horses of Achilles: like him, I struggled to keep up, always knowing that the original poem, my model and constant companion, would always gallop ahead.” #Booksky

We’ve really gone from “learn to code if you want to be competitive for a job” to “showing illiteracy for AI use and/or coding may be an asset” in a lightning fast transition. I would not be surprised if this grows in popularity.

People who associate em dashes with AI have clearly never read Agatha Christie
I remember my mother and father, of course, and I remember leaving home suddenly—being taken to the country. I remember the pigs and a nice fat farmer's wife—and everybody being very kind—and I remember, quite clearly, the funny way they used to look at me—everybody—a sort of furtive look. I knew, of course, children do, that there was something wrong—but I didn't know what.

"And then I went on a ship—it was exciting—it went on for days, and then I was in Canada and Uncle Simon met me, and I lived in Montreal with him and with Aunt Louise, and when I asked about Mummy and Daddy they said they'd be coming soon. And then—and then I think I forgot—only I sort of knew that they were dead without remembering anyone actually telling me so. Because by that time, you see, I didn't think about them anymore. I was very happy, you know. Uncle Simon and Aunt Louise were sweet to me, and I went to school and had a lot of friends, and I'd quite forgotten that I'd ever had another name, not Lemarchant. Aunt Louise, you see, told me that that was my name in Canada and that seemed quite sensible to me at the time—it was just my Canadian name—but as I say I forgot in the end that I'd ever had any other."

She flung up her defiant chin. She said:

"Look at me. You'd say—wouldn't you? If you met me: 'There goes a girl who's got nothing to worry about!' I'm well off, I've got splendid health, I'm sufficiently good to look at, I can enjoy life. At twenty, there wasn't a girl anywhere I'd have changed places with."

The fervour with which Jason Arday’s story has been feasted upon by settler colonial discourse is at once jarring and entirely unsurprising to those of us who find ourselves—willingly or otherwise—in the DEI narrative. The alleged plagiarism is entirely beside the point.

249 articles in 10 days. That’s how much ink has been spilled on Jason Arday including a particularly racist piece in The Times Sunday paper from a former student claiming he was a bad teacher and they didn’t like his class. white Cambridge prof found to have plagiarized didn’t get this scrutiny.

Can someone ELI5: how does AI detection software work? If LLMs themselves have learned by scraping the work of human writers, wouldn’t AI detection then always flag writing as probable AI? For example: I’ve had to stop using em dashes since I’ve been told it flags AI, despite their centuries of use

I think this is an especially important dynamic
“ Our beliefs tend to start cautious and become confident. Saying or hearing something again and again makes it feel true. Voiced support for “mass deportation now” likely did start as going along with a group, or being edgy, for many Republicans. But over time it became a passionately held and actionable commitment. We become who we pretend to be.”
