On Highway to Hill this week, @the-downballot.com's own @davidnir.com joined me and SoRelle to talk about these trends. "Democrats need to be prepared for the possibility of a massive year, even bigger than 2018."

Don't quite have time at the moment to create this, but this density plot I created awhile ago should show at least the special election part of the story. 2026 clearly in a different category even than 2018.

While we're all huffing hopium, here's a chart from my forthcoming @pspolisci.bsky.social article using data from @the-downballot.com. In the last three midterms, special election overperformance in swing districts closely tracked swing district overperformance in the general. Now look at 2026.

I checked, and it's true. This level of domain name management alone makes him the most qualified person to be president since at least Eisenhower

Enshittification is for academics, too! Here's the list of Canvas features a marketing team came up with that I didn't ask for and which were automatically enabled upon publishing my course. (No features just yet for "not getting your grades held for ransom by hackers")

Lol I'm definitely right about this. Wayback Machine has the "female" set on the website going back to Jan 20th of last year (hmm!), when it was just called "Supreme Court Justices Peg Dolls Set" (no "female"). Male set doesn't appear until August 2025.

If two of last night's Dem nominees - Graham Platner and Randy Villegas - both win against their R opponents, then this time next year, Lisa Murkowski will officially be the last Republican standing who voted to impeach/remove Trump in 2021. Valadao seems doomed; we will all see about Susan Collins.

A little chart I put together with data from @the-downballot.com. I looked at House districts that had special elections in the three most recent midterms, and compared their Dem candidate overperformance in those specials w/ that district's eventual Dem overperformance in the general.

Beto won Latinos 64/35 in 2018; the below result with Undecideds allocated by the current proportions commiteds are would put Talarico up 68/32.

Decided to calculate a cumulative daily total of the amount of $$$ I've spent on energy this year with my new solar (blue), compared to the amount of money those KwHs would have cost without solar (orange). 42% saved so far. More sun + sweet summer excess generation rates gonna explode that number ☀️

It definitely does vary state to state, although of course these states joined at different times. Not surprisingly western states have the lowest rates, and Peltola is running to represent the lowest!

This is a stat that's fluctuated quite a bit over time! This is data I've compiled from members' official bios via bioguide.congress.gov.

A fact potentially worth sharing: 36% of 2024's voting-age population wasn't old enough to vote when the War in Iraq began, and 20% weren't old enough to vote when it ended.

... but even if we instead compare to two cycles ago (to 2012 in the case of 2018, or 2020 in the case of 2026), this cycle's wins are much more evenly distributed. And the kicker is the middle grey group — these are the ones most like the "frontline" seats that will decide control of the House.

Interesting trend unfolding in this cycle's special elections (data courtesy of @the-downballot.com). In 2018, Dems way overperformed on average in heavily GOP districts; slightly in more competitive ones; and not at all in heavily Dem districts. In 2026, they're gangbusters in all three.

In the most recent set of SL elections in each state, the majority party in 17 out of 50 lower chambers were foregone conclusions before a single vote was cast. I know it's hard to get people to run, and that state and local party orgs are in shambles. But we've gotta do better than this.

Something potentially valuable to keep in mind when the public opinion data about Venezuela starts to come in. About a quarter of the 2024 electorate (so, more today) were not voters when Obama declared an end to the War in Iraq 2010; and 36% were not voters in 2003, when it began.
