I have finished the portrait I have wanted to paint for more than three decades... Here is the man who led the mutiny aboard the 'Bounty', Fletcher Christian. More context in alt text. #art
A painting which is my interpretation of how the young 18th-century British naval officer and mutineer of HMAV Bounty, Fletcher Christian, might have looked. No likeness from his own time survives. My version is based 30 years of research into physical descriptions of Christian, into family resemblance among portraits of his relatives, and into uniforms and hairstyles of the 1780s.Screenshot of a long explanation of this project.

During the recent Total Solar Eclipse the South Korean Danuri spacecraft obtained a nice view of Earth from Lunar orbit with the Moons shadow just visible on Earth. Here is their image, with attribution added, my colorized version and the nearly simultaneous EPIC-DSCOVR image used for the color.
This is a reduced version of the photo released today by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Earth is seen from Lunar orbit during the recent Total Solar eclipse. The Moon is barely showing shadows behind the sunlit surfaces, and the shadow of the Moon itself is just at the horizon, or perhaps 'Limb' better suits an orbital view. One very wide shadow shows a fuzzy edge on a distant rise. I added the attribution. This is my version of the Danuri Lunar orbiter photo, with color added. I combined their Earth photo with a color EPIC-DSCOVR image made at about the same time, rotated a little in 3D to better match the Danuri viewing angle for compositing. The sharpness of the B&W original is preserved with the DSCOVR full Earth photo mostly used for the color values. I also prefer this orientation with the foreground Moon at the bottom. This is the EPIC (Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera) image from the DSCOVR satellite made at close to the same time as the Danuri image, shown in reduced form but otherwise as released.
The exposure is naturally for the sunlit Earth and clouds. The Moon shadow's wide peripheral zone of gradual darkening, the 'penumbra' is where the illumination decreases as more of the Sun is eclipsed. At this time the outermost shadow area was near the Great Lakes, from this perspective a circular zone of that radius thus surrounds the progressively underexposed zone around the Moon shadow. If the exposure were adjusted to define the actual umbra, or zone of totality, the resulting small black dot in the image , about 30 percent the size of the underexposed portion seen here, would be surrounded by the greatly overexposed fully sunlit rest of the world.

Theresa May's awfulness as Prime Minister has always been severely underpriced compared to those who came before and after her. Not least by herself, given the patronising air and complete lack of self-awareness portrayed in these remarks. Hostile environment, Windrush, Lancaster House, Grenfell...
Screencap of tweet by Chatham House, showcasing video clip of Theresa May:

'Former British prime minister Theresa May offers her advice to the UK's new incoming prime minister.

"To Andy Burnham, first of all, first piece of advice: running the United Kingdom is not the same as running Manchester. You need to understand that.

Second piece of advice: given his background, you need to get yourself up and running and understanding national security, defence, and foreign policy issues very quickly".'

Marine biologist Dr. Joan Murrell Owens (b. #OTD 1933) faced racism & sickle-cell anemia kept her from diving. She persevered. With the support of the Smithsonian, she did her marine research thru the study of collection items & discovered a new genus & 3 new species of button corals. #WomenInSTEM
A back-and-white photograph of marine biologist and educator Dr. Joan Murrell Owens (1933–2011), who overcame the systemic barriers of racism and the physical limitations of sickle-cell anemia to become one of the first African American women to earn a PhD in geology, famously discovering three new species of button coral. Positioned in the right midground, she is looking directly at the viewer with a calm, intelligent, and dignified expression. Her dark hair is styled short and curly, framing a face characterized by wide, soulful eyes and a subtle, knowing smile. She wears a patterned blouse or top paired with a delicate, single-strand pearl necklace that sits elegantly against her collarbone. In the immediate left foreground sits a modern compound microscope, its black eyepiece and white metal body sharply defined. The setting is a laboratory or study, with soft-focus wooden shelves stacked with geological specimens and scientific materials visible in the shallow-depth-of-field background. The overall mood is one of quiet determination, intellectual authority, and historical distinction, beautifully capturing the essence of a pioneering woman in STEM whose legacy continues to inspire generations of scientists.
