It is finally #WormWednesday again! 🪱 The perfect time to post my photo of this 40 cm long beast! :D Scientific name: Phyllodoce lineata ↓ thread with more info ↓ #marinelife #polychaetes #invertebrates
Phyllodoce lineata against a black background.
The head (top middle-left) has a bright yellow main colour, turning more muddy towards the tip. There are 4 short antennae located at the front as well as 4 pairs of long "tentacles" (tentacular cirri), 3 of which point backwards, and 1 forwards.
In the front half, the back of the body, which is segmented as in all annelids, is also yellow with 3 brown spots per segment (one in the center, 2 on either side at the base of the parapodia). This gives the worm a stripy look.
In the back half, the worm is entirely brown. The bottom side of the worm is a light turquoise colour and slightly iridescent.
On each segment, the worm carries to leaf-shaped appendages, sometimes referred to as paddles.

Oh, I love this. A new species of sea anemone was discovered recently that parks itself on top of a hermit crab shell like a hat. It seems to feed partly off the crab's faeces, but it also excretes a hard shell that extends the crab's home. In return, it's carried around the seafloor like a king.

One fun thing about working on #ctenophores (comb jellies) is that you get to see animals nobody has depicted for more than a century. I haven't found any images of Deiopea from the time between Chun's 1880 drawing and my 1990s photo. Even shallow SCUBA exploration can yield surprises 🌊🦑🧪
Left image is a line drawing of a comb jelly from Carl Chun's 1880 masterpiece based on a specimen from the Mediterranean Sea. On the right is a photo of the same species (or at least the same genus) collected with blue-water scuba diving off the coast of Santa Barbara, CA. The photo shows thin bluish-white canals outlining the body against a black backdrop. The widely spaced comb plates are a diagnostic feature of this lobate ctenophore.
The image from Chun has been rotated 180° to align with our modern understanding of these animals. Historically, they have been interpreted like medusa jellyfish, with the mouth down, but we know they encounter their environment oral end first.

So Switzerland put on a referendum and asked its population “should we have a responsible economy that is within the limits that the planet earth can support? And put this in our constitution?” And more than 70% people voted no ??? www.francetvinfo.fr/environnemen...

It infuriates me to see these AI videos of “deep sea animals” pop up on my TikTok because the deep sea is already incredibly fucking weird, there is NO NEED to put human teeth on a freaky fish then stick weird tentacles on its butt. We already have holothurians, acorn worms, tripod fish, ETC.
