Not your average worm 🔥 Gossamer worms call the expansive waters of the ocean’s twilight zone home. Living up in the water column, thousands of feet above the seafloor, has made Tomopteris effective swimmers. They swish their bodies side to side while rowing paddle-like parapodia.

By combining DNA sequencing of museum specimens with newly collected specimens & detailed anatomical analyses, an int'l team led by the University of Göttingen has discovered 10 extraordinary new worms species. Paper published in journal: @zoojlinnsoc.bsky.social. Read more here: shorturl.at/XHVKY
Large purple barrel sponge on a coral reef, its ruffled, porous surface forming concentric folds around a single large central opening (osculum).Tangled mass of thin, curly white fibers with fine hair-like protrusions on a dark background, shown in extreme close-up to highlight their coiled texture and delicate structure.Small white segmented marine polychaete (Cladosyllis) with numerous feathery lateral parapodia along a curved body and a rounded head, annotated with labels "an", "dc", and "pa" on a black background for anatomical identification.Close-up of a white, cup-shaped sea sponge with fibrous walls and many round pores revealing its inner chamber, attached to a dark underwater surface.

Worms like gummy bears swimming up to the surface to spawn. They are probably not complete polychaete worms, but instead, segments that detach and swim away from the main body just for spawning, while the actual worm stays safe and snug in its den somewhere below.

Finally, footage from that new whale graveyard. The fact that fossils and fresh carcasses mix together in this spot is bonkers. But of course it makes sense, because the scavengers that live down there also need a steady supply over millions of years. They can't just suddenly adapt to the deep.

If you look at the @inaturalist.bsky.social world map of distribution Helobdella leeches are everywhere - except the too cold near-polar places. They are also good invaders - as obviously has occurred here. But behind the hype an interesting find nevertheless.
