You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

I fondly remember the old arcade game Xenophobe, where one of the player characters was Dr. Zordirz.

If it doesn't need a youth aspect, then I would definitely say the X-Files. Its whole "uncovering the Truth that THEY don't want you to know" vibe could easily be molded to cult purposes

So much of what we’re living through right now, from Trump to AI, feels like it’s driven by an explicit strategy of “we just do the crimes so quickly that we can’t be stopped and by the time the courts weigh in, they have no choice but to accept our crimes.” www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/it-s-the-a...

I was once nearly run over in a marked crosswalk by a BMW SUV, and as it sped away I saw a FEEL THE BERN bumper sticker on its rear

Funny you should mention those. I've been more than half expecting him to try getting his name onto the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument if he succeeds with the Kennedy Center. If he couldn't actually rename them, he'd still find some excuse to get his name carved into their marble.

That dialect mapping thing that's going around was pretty darn accurate for me. Related: is it a sign of paranoia that I made sure to do it in my least-used browser on my least-used computer, while logged into a VPN?

Also, as you get older it gets easier and easier to say "Hey, new content for something I used to love? I'll definitely check that out sometime, when I have a moment, oh wait now the new content is five years old"

If Trump does succeed in getting his name on the Kennedy Center, by 2028 we're going to be looking at the Trump Lincoln Memorial and Trump Washington Monument

This isn't the important point, but in the pre-Trump years I purchased beer on the Mall numerous times, at the annual Smithsonian folklife festivals.

Next Dem government genuinely should have a "Covid reckoning" but about whose fault it is that like 200,000 extra people died during the Delta wave because they refused vaccination and who convinced them to do that and why.

People were upset about a novel virus, the death and suffering it caused, and the social disruption to avoid more death and suffering. But getting mad at a virus isn’t emotionally satisfying. So find a person to blame, ideally someone you already hate. They victimized you! Yeah, that’s the stuff.

man I will just never get over the fact that the collective response to the pandemic, and an absolutely miraculous vaccine development, was to destroy public health in this country and smear everyone involved I generally take a positive view of humanity overall but it's so depressing

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?

Big business runs our media and so they're much more excited about AI and the concentrated profits to oligarchs it promises than solar, which has diffuse benefits to all people. In fact, solar will kill one of their favorite businesses (big oil)

I actually like Dylan. But I always remember seeing him play at a free concert before Bill Clinton's inauguration. Someone sang a song in Spanish, then later someone sang a song in Navajo. Then Dylan came out, and after a minute, someone near me turned to a friend and asked, "Is this in English?"

Amazing original insight I just had, which I will generously share with the world: If you have a group of 8 people traveling on Amtrak, you probably won't all get seats together, so there's no point in blocking the aisle while you try.

Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents. I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.

Aside from the embrace of Wellness Eugenics I think RFK jr's moves all make sense if you are trying to destroy actual medical industries and replace them with wellness snake oil. We can all agree on the greed of the former but at least they create actual usable products

That's a good idea, but doesn't help with one of the most annoying horn situations: the people who insist on honking the horn to confirm the door is locked, every single time they park their car.

And as an aside, we should not let anyone quietly remove Trump's name from things. Removing his name from each and every building, demolishing his stupid monuments, melting down his dumb gold decorations and FIFA prize, each should be a televised national event.
