🇬🇧 The Warm Homes Plan is a welcome step towards smart, low-carbon tech playing a central role in home upgrades. ⚡🏠 As empirical backing for that shift, our research shows that heat pumps cut carbon ~70%, while solar + batteries can slash bills for fuel-poor households (even below zero in summer).

Excellent recommendations to make public charging cheaper (for users and the overall system):
To realise the full potential of smart public charging for both infrastructure efficiency
and equitable access, governments can:
• Incentivise pass-through pricing: market structures should encourage operators to
reflect low marginal costs of renewables in retail prices.
• Mandate real-time pricing and metering: require charge points to support dynamic
tariffs and data visibility.
• Enable open data platforms: provide consumers with real-time pricing information
to support choice and transparency.

This recent working paper by @rmetcalfe.bsky.social e.a. for @centrefornetzero.bsky.social shows how effective automated EV smart charging is: "42% reduction in household electricity demand during peak hours, with 100% of this demand shifted to low-cost, low-emission off-peak periods."
Figure shows electricity consumption throughout the day for a baseline and with an EV tariff. During the off-peak period in the middle of the night, consumption is much higher with the EV tariff, while during the peak in the early evening it is much lower.

Everyone needs to be able to plug into the electric vehicle revolution
Electric vehicle charging has a pricing problem. While at-home charging can cost as little as 7p per kilowatt hour (kWh) in the UK, drivers reliant on the public charging network face rates up to 10 times higher, a factor that could undermine the UK’s ambition for 100% of new vehicles for sale to be electric or hybrid by 2035.
