This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, American biotechnology and biological expertise helped deliver vaccines, diagnostics and treatments. The response had profound shortcomings, especially the failure to ramp up diagnostic testing and the lack of personal protective equipment available to medical staff in the earliest days of the pandemic. We should be building on our capacity and correcting those failures. Instead, we are weakening our public health infrastructure while thousands of Americans, including many children, suffer from preventable infections like measles. We are also undermining preparation for future potential threats, such as H5N1 influenza — the bird flu. That virus was recently detected at a U.S. mink farm, and remains a potential pandemic pathogen. The Trump administration canceled a contract to develop an mRNA H5N1 vaccine for humans.

Yes, he was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago to a famous Black anthropologist, Allison Davis, who became 3rd AA to hold a full faculty position at a major white university when he joined the staff of UCHICAGO in 1942. His grandfather was a prominent NAACP anti-lynching attorney.
