I know this will sound like a lie, but it really is my favorite thing to spend hours or even days on a section of writing, never quite getting it right, and then realize the whole piece will be better if you just cut it

one of the greats by one of the greats: Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s “The Leaving”
The Leaving
My father said I could not do it, but all night I picked the peaches.
The orchard was still, the canals ran steadily.
I was a girl then, my chest its own walled garden.
How many ladders to gather an orchard?
I had only one and a long patience with lit hands and the looking of the stars which moved right through me the way the water moved through the canals with a voice that seemed to speak of this moonless gathering and those who had gathered before me.
I put the peaches in the pond's cold water, all night up the ladder and down, all night my hands twisting fruit as if I were entering a thousand doors, all night my back a straight road to the sky.
And then out of its own goodness, out of the far fields of the stars, the morning came, and inside me was the stillness a bell possesses just after it has been rung, before the metal begins to long again for the clapper's stroke.
The light came over the orchard.
The canals were silver and then were not, and the pond was—I could see as I laid the last peach in the water—full of fish and eyes.

Please share the application with anyone you think might be interested and help us spread the word! Here’s a bit more about Periplus, why we exist, and how we assess fellowship applications:
Periplus is a mentorship collective serving U.S. writers who identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color. We’re happy you’ve found us. We’re looking for mentees—Periplus Fellows—who are located in the United States, and are at least 18 years old, and whose writing shows great promise. We are seeking to mentor writers who are relatively early in their careers and would especially like to award fellowships to those with limited past access to writing resources and supportive communities. We aim to equalize access so that writers can achieve their goals regardless of their background and affiliations.

In assessing your application, we’ll be most focused on the promise we see in your writing sample. We will also consider how helpful a Periplus Fellowship could be for your craft and career.

From “The Moths”
The Moths
Mary Oliver

There’s a kind of white moth, I don’t know
what kind, that glimmers
by mid-May
in the forest, just
as the pink moccasin flowers
are rising.

If you notice anything,
it leads you to notice
more
and more.

And anyway
I was so full of energy.
I was always running around, looking
at this and that.

If I stopped
the pain
was unbearable.

If I stopped and thought, maybe
the world
can’t be saved,
the pain
was unbearable.

Finally, I noticed enough.
All around me in the forest
the white moths floated.

How long do they live, fluttering
in and out of the shadows?

You aren’t much, I said
one day to my reflection
in a green pond,
and grinned.

The wings of the moths catch the sunlight
and burn
so brightly.

At night, sometimes,
they slip between the pink lobes
of the moccasin flowers and lie there until dawn,
motionless
in those dark halls of honey.

hello, today the final story in my collection, "How to Be a Black Writer" is in @literaryhub.bsky.social: lithub.com/how-to-be-a-... the story is in stylistic conversation with Lorrie Moore's "how to become a writer" and Kiese Laymon's "you are the second person"
From the screenshotted excerpt: "You chose this program based on money and because you never had a Black person of any gender teach you anything about writing or reading. You learned math and Black Studies and the safest way to blow and push life into another person from other Black people, but none of them had taught you how to tell a story.

There is a family legend about how you learned how to read, that one day you were sitting at a kitchen table, four years old, beads in your hair because you were fresh back from a visit to your Mom-Mom’s, and you said something like, “Good morning. I hate Mondays. Lasagna,” and your parents realized you were reading a comic aloud to yourself. Reading came to you like a sudden burst into fruit brought forth by unseen winds.

You wanted a lineage. Sometimes, creating one doesn’t take generations upon generations. It can be established, at least in the arts, with the right, thoughtful conversation or idea passed around a table in two hours and forty-five minutes on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

I want to tell you that you’ll make it through this year. But did you?

Simple chart that shows how much more contagious #measles is than most other illnesses.
How contagious is measles?
Epidemiologists estimate the contagiousness of an infectious disease with a "basic reproductive number," or Ro - how many people a sick person infects, in a community with no protection.
A disease can grow out of control if an infected person infects more than one other person, on average. A person with the flu can infect one to two others - an Ro between 1 and 2.
But a person with measles can infect 10 times as many:
DISEASE
Measles
CONTAGIOUSNESS (EST. Ro)
12 to 18
Whooping cough
12 to 17
Covid (Omicron)
10
Chickenpox
Polio
5 to 7
Covid (Delta)
5
Flu (1918)
2
Seasonal flu
1 to 2
Figures are rounded. Sources: Research published in The Lancet (measles and 1918 flu); Journal of Travel Medicine (the Covid variants Omicron and Delta); Vaccine (polio); Science (chickenpox, whooping cough);
Epidemiology and Infection (seasonal flu)

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

ARMED FEDERAL AGENTS AND CONTRACTORS ENTER
TOHONO O'ODHAM NATION LAND Tribal Members Should Remain Vigilant, Avoid Escalation, and Prioritize Personal Safety SELLS, Ariz. - This morning at 4:00 a.m., border wall contractors and approximately 20 masked, armed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents from the Tucson Sector entered the Tohono O'odham Nation and began engaging in pre-construction activities. The contractors, who are on the Nation illegally, were accompanied by agents as they worked on three separate locations near the border with
drill trucks to conduct soil sampling and other activities. This is in direct violation of the Tohono O'odham Code, Title 4, Chapter 2, "Civil Trespass; Removal and Exclusion of Nonmembers." We previously warned unauthorized individuals attempting to access our land that they would be in violation of this trespassing law. Tohono O'odham Police Department (TOPD) officers were on the scene this morning and have been monitoring the situation. In addition to the CBP agents, multiple BIA officers and a CBP BORTAC SWAT Team have been deployed to the Nation to protect the contractors, and a tethered balloon is being used by federal authorities for enhanced monitoring. CBP has set up a vehicle blockade to prevent TOPD from issuing citations and removing
contractors. We have also learned that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has coordinated with Mexican police to have them deploy personnel to protect the area from the southern side while border wall contractors are doing work. At this time, interactions between TOPD and federal law enforcement have
been peaceful and professional. We will continue to monitor the situation. We want to stress the importance of the safety and wellbeing of our tribal citizens. We encourage all Tohono O'odha…
