I can tell you this, I dressed as Tintin for Halloween while pregnant, “non-binary” feels possible. Why else would maternity jodhpurs exist?

Poem titled "The Visiting Dignitary" (first in a cycle of three) by Adrienne Celt

The day is crisp. Spring air, which still wants
a hat and jacket. Plus the smell of salt.
I call out, Volodya! and he smiles when he sees me
wave. A reserved expression, but pleased.
He looks like my uncle, both before and after
that uncle inflated himself with vodka,
skin puffed and pink as a buoy.
Today, he squints in the sun and I invite him aboard
my boat. A small sailing vessel, which sinks
and bobs in the waves, moving under Volodya’s weight.
The water is calm. You can see to the bottom
of the harbor, where the red starfish are
glinting.
Volodya looks around and nods
at the evergreens, the unusual blue
of the sky, the slate grey water. Just as I do.
We’re headed out past Orcas to John’s,
a small island dense with cabins and trees
which I have been visiting since I was a child.
On the beach, I will teach Volodya to feed the tame deer,
putting pancakes into their velvet mouths.
Here he is not the man he is.
I want to ask him, as I want to ask all men of his kind,
if he does not realize that he will someday die.
Beneath his pink skin he wears the skull
that he will wear for all eternity.

I know this will sound like a lie, but it really is my favorite thing to spend hours or even days on a section of writing, never quite getting it right, and then realize the whole piece will be better if you just cut it

one of the greats by one of the greats: Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s “The Leaving”
The Leaving
My father said I could not do it, but all night I picked the peaches.
The orchard was still, the canals ran steadily.
I was a girl then, my chest its own walled garden.
How many ladders to gather an orchard?
I had only one and a long patience with lit hands and the looking of the stars which moved right through me the way the water moved through the canals with a voice that seemed to speak of this moonless gathering and those who had gathered before me.
I put the peaches in the pond's cold water, all night up the ladder and down, all night my hands twisting fruit as if I were entering a thousand doors, all night my back a straight road to the sky.
And then out of its own goodness, out of the far fields of the stars, the morning came, and inside me was the stillness a bell possesses just after it has been rung, before the metal begins to long again for the clapper's stroke.
The light came over the orchard.
The canals were silver and then were not, and the pond was—I could see as I laid the last peach in the water—full of fish and eyes.

Please share the application with anyone you think might be interested and help us spread the word! Here’s a bit more about Periplus, why we exist, and how we assess fellowship applications:
Periplus is a mentorship collective serving U.S. writers who identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color. We’re happy you’ve found us. We’re looking for mentees—Periplus Fellows—who are located in the United States, and are at least 18 years old, and whose writing shows great promise. We are seeking to mentor writers who are relatively early in their careers and would especially like to award fellowships to those with limited past access to writing resources and supportive communities. We aim to equalize access so that writers can achieve their goals regardless of their background and affiliations.

In assessing your application, we’ll be most focused on the promise we see in your writing sample. We will also consider how helpful a Periplus Fellowship could be for your craft and career.

(fwiw I am not arguing necessarily that medicine is better in Russia, just that they looked for very different conditions based on a number of factors, and it sure does suck that no one looked for them here. Both had been told it was all psychological! One was a tumor! The other was a parasite!)

When I was studying abroad in Russia, TWO of my friends were diagnosed with (different) chronic conditions that doctors in America just hadn't thought to look for, and they were both so relieved. I ran into one right after she got the news, and she hugged me and bought a cake.

This is really good! The movie makes the most sense to me as a metaphor for AI in general, but layering in Benjamin/the age of mechanical reproduction really gets at why the liminal space is so effective.

Solidarity! Half of my prescription was sent to a pharmacy in another state, so insurance wouldn't pay for it here until they canceled the order. When I called them to cancel, they said they'd SHIPPED it to me and could review whether they can cancel in 5-7 business days, which is also the ship time
