One of my absolute favourite responses to any type of media is “I’m confused” or “what just happened” at the end of something when literally no information has been revealed. Like watch or read or whatever and you won’t find out, that’s how it works.

Marginalized folks know TONE and LANGUAGE CHOICE are only part of what’s being communicated. But those in the power majority are accustomed to spaces that value and demand the faux nicety of polite tones no matter the core message being shared. To them, sounding angry makes you wrong in any event.

Q: Ok but more seriously; what’s the thing you’d most want players to take away from the game? I ask because it’s such a thematically dense game that also keeps kind of folding in on itself in its narrative, and you can read the text in so many different ways from the super personal biographical angle to the really big existential questions. I was wondering if there’s a theme or idea that you’d like to highlight as something especially important to you.

So, I think yes, there are many themes and things that it's hard for us to say one thing.

Instead, I will say, what is important to me -- I really hope players come away with the feeling that the game itself loves stories and loves the way stories can be told, and that it and we are RESTLESS in the ways we want to try and tell them.

I also really hope people feel the sense of love we have for games, in the way we told these stories.

I often said internally, this is a narrative game that has played and loved a lot of games, and is excited about them.

That we are always just searching for a moment that we can collectively, as the player and as the maker, look out at a kind of unknown horizon together at the possibility and unpredictability of what could happen next. I think we're always searching for that internally.

It's been enough time that I feel comfortable openly saying that I think an issue with E33 is that it believes that Maelle's position is wrong/childish. But is also wants you to believe people in the canvas are *real* people. It implicitly argues her position while wanting player to do otherwise.

Really, I treasure the process my story went through with khōréō. My editor Kanika and I had such careful, engaged conversations about its thorns, and the entire audio team did such a great job bringing it to life.
