Let's do some Canadian pipeline-wildfire math. The Canadian Energy Center says growing oil exports by 1.5M barrels/day **could** boost GDP by ~31B annually. Meanwhile, wildfire smoke health costs alone - just the health costs, nothing else - averaged 23B/year, past tense. And they're growing fast.

Look, I think spite is actually a great motivation to not give up. You look at who wants you to despair, who wants you to say, “Well, we’re going to take the L on this one.” Look at those people. Do you like those people? Do you want to make those people happy? Absolutely not.
Oh, you want me to despair? Fuck you.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

On the Blue Jays’ class toward Alex Vesia, who is away from the Dodgers while dealing with a family emergency right now:

•ll 5G+ E2
It was an incredible gesture by the Jays for a number of reasons. First, it showed a solidarity between all relief pitchers, who usually bounce around from team to team just
trying to stick somewhere. And second, it was a simple act of decency and caring about others in an American era where those two things are seen as weaknesses.
Our country has treated Canada like garbage this year, and we don't deserve this grace shown back in return. Athletes are often in the news for acting like buffoons. What the Jays did last night *to support their opponent during the World Series (!!!)* was extraordinary, and I wanted to mention it off the top so it didn't get lost in the shuffle.
What a classy team. Kindness is free.
