Green spaces are also essential to our health. Research suggests that access to green spaces supports our mental, physical, and social well-being. 1/2
GREEN SPACES
ARE INTEGRAL
TO PUBLIC HEALTH
In celebration of Earth Day, let‘s explore how access to green spaces are linked with lower levels of illness, greater mental well-being, and positive environmental impact.

“Green space” is an umbrella term and incorporates many different types of spaces.
From urban to rural areas, here are a few examples: national parks, green roofs, sports fields, street trees, wetlands, community gardens
Epidemiological studies found that the utilization of green spaces is associated with a myriad of health benefits.
Using green spaces can lower rates of heart disease and stroke. Access to green spaces encourages healthy outdoor activities and can decrease rates of obesity. Visiting large green spaces, like forests, has been found to improve immune system functioning.
Sources: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, Health Place
Green spaces are associated with reduced loneliness and lower risk of mental health illnesses.
Lower incidence rates of loneliness were found among people with access to green spaces within 1 mile of their home, especially for those living alone.
A meta-analysis found that a 10% increase in the proportion of green space is associated with a lower risk of depression and anxiety.
Research supports the positive impact green spaces have on children diagnosed with ADHD. Access to green spaces has been seen to decrease symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity.
