Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

Step 1: give your subordinate departments clear objectives Step 2: fund your departments and trust them to execute Step 3: publicly praise the Director if the results are good, quietly replace the Director if the results are bad

@urbaneastnash.bsky.social runs an urbanism library based out of the Civic Design Center but a book club would be a smash, too!

To be fair, we are going to by far the best part of Texas. Many are calling it "Nashville 5 Years From Now".

Took @nashvillebcycleops.bsky.social to McDougal's for lunch and saw a bike locked up to a sign outside. Figured there must be somebody I knew in there, and sure enough... had a delightful lunch with local legend @benvaught.bsky.social! Bikes support a level of community that cars could never.

My goodness, this need to happen at Greenfield and Gallatin. The frontage landscaping on the Kroger lot totally blocks the visibility for right turners so they have to crawl all the way past the front of the bike box to see before turning right on red. Horrible to navigate on two wheels!

Lock in y'all, we're talking about East Bank Boulevard again. The Wasioto Bend MCSP amendment is going before the Planning Commission this afternoon. This amendment proposes a new street grid through the Wasioto Bend neighborhood, including the portion of East Bank Boulevard south of KVB.

I would argue that the successful passage of the Choose How You Move referendum was transformational and will provide positive impacts for decades moving forward. I get the frustration with the pace of change, but I am bullish on lots of other issues downstream of transportation.

The bus should drop off and pick up from a preferred space directly in front of the terminal. It should be boldly branded and advertised as a cost-effective alternative to ride share. These are baseline, minimum improvements that would instantly increase ridership, especially on the inbound leg!

“Keep my neighborhood shitty, so I don’t get outbid for housing here” is a real and pervasive fear borne almost completely out of the artificial housing scarcity we’ve imposed on ourselves. Not as common among the land holding class, but it pops up more than I would’ve guessed generally.

Chris Bowe @cbowe34.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
It is, in fact, especially beneficial to people who choose to drive if there are less other people driving. This is why it is totally reasonable to tell drivers that they need to slow down for the benefit of everyone around them, while they accrue the benefits of less competition on the road.

I think I am susceptible to AI psychosis, but in the very specific way where if I ask it enough questions about why football teams don't deploy multiple offensive players that can throw and run well, it will convince me that I am the next Ben Johnson with my two QB playbook

When coupled with an in-depth review and future planning for capital improvements at the site, this could be a potent combination for systematically eliminating fatal crash risk at areas where fatalities are actually occurring. Can't wait to see how this works for Spokane!

Chris Bowe @cbowe34.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The program includes rapid response traffic calming to remain in effect for ~2 weeks following a fatal crash. Treatments include traffic cones, special branded signage indicating a fatality occurred, and even painted roadway markings indicating a Fatal Crash Zone.

🚨 🚨 EMERGENCY STREETS PILOT PROGRAM 🚨 🚨 Nashville’s Vision Zero Advisory Committee has been pushing for a similar approach for years, falling on deaf ears at NDOT. Maybe a positive example will give them the push to commit to rapid response like the City of Spokane!

Nashville has been steadily expanding service roughly 2-3 per year for several years now - increased frequency, longer service hours, a new transit hub in North Nashville that birthed several cross town connectors, etc. This year we've seen an acceleration in new shelter placements too!

It would save East Nashville bike commuters so much cumulative time if we could use Gallatin Pike, the one and only road that goes all the way from there to there without interruption, lmao

So my zoned elementary school is firmly the fifth most easily bikeable elementary school from my house, and yet - that is where my son would go to school. In fact, my zoned school is in a different Council District than my house! Needless to say, I won't be organizing a bike bus any time soon 😞

Chris Bowe @cbowe34.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
The "safer" route using Riverside and Greenwood actually runs through THREE OTHER elementary school districts! Dan Mills then Inglewood then Rosebank, and finally back across Gallatin into my zone! I would also consider Chadwell, to the north of my house, to be more bike accessible...

I plotted a course on Google Maps between my house and Hattie Cotton Elementary. Google suggested that I ride directly down Gallatin Pike for a majority of the route. Bike heads know this is a no-go, so I opted for a customized route on slightly more comfortable roads...

I'm seeing lots of amazing bike bus stories going around on Bluesky, and it got me thinking - could I be a part of a bike bus when my son is ready for elementary school? I live just west of Gallatin Pike up behind El Fuego. That puts our family in the Hattie Cotton Zone for elementary school...

I would write an email to valeria.martinez@nashville.gov and ask if Inglewood Elementary has received any upgraded school zone markings yet. If not, you may be able to find out if it is on the schedule, or even recommend some elements to be installed as part of the Safe Routes to School program.

I used to rig up an entire gaming system, complete with a ~9" screen, original Xbox, a speaker, and a converter that allowed us to power the plugs through the cigarette lighter for long baseball / vacation road trips. They're good memories, but wild the lengths we would go to stay entertained!

It should be celebrated that in an era where transit funding crises are putting entire systems in major cities at existential risk, Nashville just keeps improving transit year after year, even before we had a dedicated funding source. Can’t wait to see what these numbers look like in 2030 or 2040.
